I did have another thought on this and if Openreach now can pass control over CPS calls then BT could also do the same and stop you using another provider.

They can't - it states so earlier in the thread. BT must allow you the ability (except for schemes like LUS) to use prefixes.

That is not what Ofcom said, but I am not sure how clued up the guy was on this issue.

Just noticed on the BT site that they are increasing some of their prices for extras and non-inclusive call connection fees from next month, if you are thinking of switching back:
    http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/dynamicmodules/pagecontentfooter/pageContentFooterPopup.jsp?pagecontentfooter_popupid=23771

Most of these charges can be avoided by using other providers (e.g. 18185) for calls outside of your inclusive allowance. The benefit of Mobile Saver seems to have been eroded a bit though.

I haven't been able to determine whether or not I'm affected by the CPS changes yet, but should be getting a bill from both Virgin and BT shortly, so time will tell!

It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

For our home phone, we have Option 1 line rental through BT, our calls our through Virgin as part of our broadband package and we use 1899/18185 for daytime calls.

I've just received a letter from BT warning me that some call providers are changing the way they provide calls, which will mean that even if we use the 1280 prefix to put calls through BT, BT will not be providing the call and our calls provider will charge for it. The result will be that we cannot make chargeable calls through BT and therefore cannot qualify for free caller display or BT Answer 1571.

BT's website does not state which call providers will be changing their service, so I can't confirm whether or not we will be affected.

Also, if dialling 1280 will not route the call through BT, does that mean that other prefix numbers such as 18185 will also cease to work? Or could it be a ploy by BT to get more customers to sign up to their call packages? Call me cynical, but...

Is there any more information out there on this?

But what if, I change to BT "Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan" as my BT line rental, do I still have Sky Talk Unlimited phone package as well without the need to use the 1280 override code to get the free caller display?

You can't have two suppliers providing your calls. If you choose BT Evening & Weekend BT are handling all your calls. If you choose Sky Talk Unlimited they handle your calls.

If you move your calls to another supplier make sure you switch to "The Unlimited Weekend Plan"(formerly known as BT Together Option 1) and get rid of any bolt ons,as BT will still continue to charge you for them if you dont.

If you choose Sky Talk for calls, then no you can no longer use BT for calls.

However if you choose Primus Saver 2 then you can still use BT for calls (Though will the follow suit even though they said they won't and block 1280).

It appears Sky is doing a 'staged' changeover - so some Sky Talk CPS users can still use the 1280 bypass code, but those who have already been changed cannot.

Incredibly, Sky appears not to think it necessary to advise its customers.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
