  • Stick some in a pot and keep on windowsill. Pretty plant (and you can still eat the tuber if you ever run out)

I'd definitely freeze it and grate it from frozen. It's what I do although I've only got a little piece. You won't need to buy ginger ever again :D
i think i got a bargain, £1.87 and its still on their website, :D

  • The same happened to me the first time I did an online order with Sainsbo, you can select by weight or items, I ordered by weight and tried to work out how much we usually spend on ginger and added that weight. However something obviously went wrong somewhere and I ended up with masses whereas I usually just break a knob off. I wasn't sure how to keep it, one of my friends suggested freezing it, this way actually makes it easier to grate too! I really like ginger and tend to put bits of it into bolognaises, lasagnes etc :)

I have just recieved my online shop from Asda and have been given 1kg of ginger, one of us has made a mistake. Does anyone have any recipe ideas as I dont want it to go to waste and its not something I usually buy due to price.

It'll keep in the fridge for ages :D As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existign thread to give you more ideas.

  • Hey guys i have just started my weekly meal plan and one of the meals i have planned includes fresh ginger.

i dont want to have to buy a huge piece of ginger for me to only use a portion of it and the rest of it to go to waste.

i also don't have the time to make things like ginger beer or bake with it.

So what i need to know is can i freeze the left over ginger??

    Thanks in advance

I haven't tried it but I can't see any reason why fresh ginger couldn't be frozen. If you only need a small amount per recipe I'd be tempted to cut it up into the size of pieces you need before freezing it so you won't have to defrost the whole lot and then not be able to freeze it again. Or you could grate the whole thing and freeze it in that state so it might be easier to take out what you need each time.

Frezes fine and you can grate it from frozen too :D

I tape mine in a freezer bag to the lid of my chest freezer so it doesn't go AWOL :rotfl:

I freeze a huge piece whole and just use brute force to cut off a chunk when I need it for a recipe. I find a little sharp knife will chop it into little bits in no time, it starts defrosting very quickly and you can put it into recipes frozen anyway. It just kinda melts!
