I've been taking 'navy showers' and, inspired by this thread, timed how long the water was actually on for tonight. Total came to exactly 60 seconds, which still seems like quite a lot.

Of course it's not so appealing on a cold winter's morning when the bathroom is chilly!

We have 2 electric showers and a power shower over the bath, for which the water is heated by boiler...we all use the electric ones during the summer when heat is off...must admit I have never costed them, but since I was in Australia last have been limiting everyone to 4 minute showers...water is their problem, not heating costs as most places we visited had solar water heating.

I am just thanking the Good Lord that I have my solid fuel range that produces so much hot water for free (please do not throw stones) - my ex keeps me supplied with logs for it (he has to cut a lot of hedges and trees back when he is agriculatural fencing) and it provides heating, hot water and cooking (plus great for drying washing on the hanging rail above).

I love my shower (straight off the water supply - no pump) and have one (and sometimes two - if I have been gardening or cleaning animals out) every day but sometimes a long bath. Boys prefer baths - and do so every day, but they have to both use the same water, so one goes first one day, the other one the next (but oldest son is often filthy from Rugby or whatever other pursuit involves rolling in mud - so youngest gets to go first most often).

Their only "dirty to bed" night is Friday, cos we always seem to get finished late on a Friday and like to settle down together - so they just have a quick wash and clean teeth.

Cannot always have it on in the summer cos it gets too hot - but it cuts the cost of one of lifes little luxuries (and we do not have a great many of those so would not want to give up this one:o ).

If I had to choose between expensive gunge to put on my face, and a long soak in a pamper bath - then I would choose the bath everytime. But then I don't have much patience with staring at my ugly mug in the mirror anyway!

incidentally, i heard on radio 4 not so long ago that in Oz, they have a major draought, and everyone has to have shower timers - 3 mins max. Also they are not allowed to awash any other paert of the car apart from windows, thats by law. Apparently the Auzzies have got it sorted, and regualrly grass up thier neighbours for washing other parts of thier cars and watering gardens et.c
Though we do have very tight water restrictions here in Aus, we don't have to have shower timers, it's just a 3 min shower is the recommended. Depends how tight your restrictions are as to what you can wash - you can always wash the whole car at a car wash (they recycle the water there), but you often can't hose anything, and garden watering is at certain times on certain days depending where you live.

Here they have a government initiative called "Waterwise", where for $25 (about a tenner) a qualified plumber comes around. They fix any dripping taps, fit aerators to them and replace your shower head with an economical one. We've had it done, and though I was worried to start with I'd be standing under the shower catching a drip, we soon got used to it.... and we shower together. We'd rather take 6 minutes together than 3 minutes separately! In summer when it's warm enough we switch off the shower whilst soaping and shampooing, that cuts down a lot of usage.

"Grassing up the neighbours" would be a bit on the hard side too - all these restrictions apply to "town water", that is water that is taken from the mains. You can do what you like with tank water (rainwater collected in very large tanks - imagine 50 water butts!), or bore water, so you'd never know what the neighbours were using.

I normally either wash my hair under the shower, with the bath plug in, then use the water to wash the rest of me - it's normally quite deep, as my hair is annoyingly thick and curly, and it takes forever to wash the shampoo out, or I top up my daughters' bath with hot water, once she's gone to bed. Even when it's topped up, it only comes to about half full, but it's scary that that in itself costs 50p :(
Unfortunately, my partner then comes home at the weekends, and probably uses more hot water than we do all week, he tends to splash about in a full bath, but only for 5 minutes, which seems like a waste to me!!

I have had 3 baths in 3 years and they were all in the first couple of weeks after I moved here. The bath is deep and hard to get out of so it was a blessing in disguise. I attached an ecocamel shower head a couple of months ago and it is making a considerable difference to my daily gas (and water) usage. I only use gas for water at the moment. The actual shower is lovely to use and I just bought another one for the spare en suite

As per the article that tiff references:

Water on - get wet - water off - lather up - water on - rinse. Several on/off cycles may be required to do face, body and hair with different products.
