  • Thank you all so much, you've given me loads of ideas for stuff. I like the idea of a nice set of books for them to keep until they are abit older.

My Godson was Christened on Sunday. As we were all struggling to find something to buy him we ended up giving him money with which his parents bought him Premium Bonds. A gift that will last forever and might just make him a fortune.

Needs a few of you to get together to do this. Minimum purchase is £100, and there are restrictions on who can buy them for the child. Glad to hear though that children are still being Christened.
  • I had a step-stool for my son when he was christened, it was lovely and he will us it lots as he gets bigger and needs to reach things. What about a steiff bear?
  • My neice had her 3 children christened last year, ages, 3,2,and 6 months. I felt I wanted to do something which would help in their futures and so I gave her a small cheque made payable to each of the children so that she had to open an account for each of them. This means that other people will in future be able to add to it by giving them cheques which help cub impulse buying and one day they can buy something they realy realy want. I did this for my son, and at 15 he bought a keyboard costing £200. Knowing how long it took to get those bits of money together to buy it, he cherishes it. To me, this is good training for life and its something different from what everyone else will do.
Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults
  • I bought a hand painted picture from Annie Haak.co.uk which spelt out my god daughters name. Underneath her name, I had a personal message inscripted on it so that she could keep the picture for years to come. It was quite expensive as her name is 7 letters long, I think it cost approx £80.00, but it was lovely and very different and personal to anything else she was given.

This went down well and has pride of place on her bedroom wall. Hopefully she will still have it later on in life.
Nice Shoes & Expensive Designer Handbags, are my downfall!

My Godson was dedicated last w/end & I got him a framed sampler. It went down well & was made by a friend who does it for a living.

Two birds with one stone - got a lasting, portable gift that parents loved & grandparents kicked themselves for not thinking of first :D and managed to get her a couple of possible customers at the same time!

  • Best present I ever gave - bought a bottle of port in Harrods' sale for my BF's firstborn. It was delivered by a uniformed flunky (not sure if this would still be the case?)

My instructions were 'it's for his 18th, but you can drink it before then if you get desperate'. Despite the arrival of 4 other kids in the meantime, the port made it until he was 18.....:)
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • For my Godson I named a star after him (though I know it's not legal or anything.) But you could also try having a tree planted for them. Visit https://www.woodland-trust.org.uk

It costs £10 to have 1 small tree planted or £25 for 3 trees that in years to come will provide a nice woodland area. (They have several sites across Britain that they are trying to introduce more wooded areas.)

Or you also think ahead and buy a really good bottle of wine/champers from the year he was born. Keep it safe so that when s/he is 18 they've got a great bottle. Might be worth seeing your local specialist wine merchant for that. Cheap present now that could be worth loads in the future.
