After extensive haggling with T-mobile, I renewed my contract and managed to get....
300 mins
300 texts
Unlimited data (up to 3gb on Web & Walk Plus)
....for £5 a month on a 24month contract. I can still upgrade at any time to a higher paid tariff and get a new phone if I wish too.
With this jaw dropping deal I can then go and buy an iPhone 4 outright at £499 (16gb).
So over 24 months =
£5 x 24 = £120
+
£499
= £720
Divide 720 by 24 = £25.83 per month on a 2 year contract.
The equivalent deal (with only 500mb of data but unilimited texts) is £30/month and £179 for the phone from O2 (which is £899 over 24 months). So this is a saving of £179.
So if you're a T-mobile customer or for that matter with any other network offering their customers a loyalty bonus on renewal this could just be the way for you to go.
You could easily get t-mobiles 12 months sim only with 600mins 500texts unlimited data upto a 1gb (normally £15) for £10 or as an existing customer, but this would drop your saving to £49 which hardly makes it worth it. But if you can push for a £10 loyalty discount on this tariff, you've got yourself a deal.
The added bonus is your iPhone will be unlocked as it is purchased directly from the apple store, saving you about £20, that is if you ever need to unlock your iPhone. You can save a further 3% off the retail price if you go through quidco.com. This would help ofset the interest you would have earned paying for the phone gradually over the contract period.
I hope that helps
Except you won't get 3gb on T-mobile unless you have an Android phone, irrespective of which SIM only deal you have. You'll get 1gb.
And your maths leaves a lot to be desired. £120 + £499 = £619 or £25.79 a month. You said £720. That also makes your way of doing it even cheaper than you said over the O2 deal, £270 over the life of the contract.0 -

Thanks - that's interesting - I'm due an upgrade with T-mobile too.
But how do you get a microsim, which I understand is what you need for an iphone 4?.0 -
I want to either buy the iphone 4 outright from Apple and take out a SIM-only contract or go for the Tesco 12 month contract. Neither of these are available and I'm getting very impatient.
Apple say they deliver three weeks from the date of ordering but I don't want to commit to this in case Tesco get a delivery quicker.0 -

Apple don't take money off you until they dispatch the item, also if you log onto your Apple account you can cancel the item as long its not been shipped

Don't know if you can just ask T-mobile for one, but technically there is no difference between a micro-sim and a 'normal' 3G SIM card apart from the excess plastic around the chip, so people have just been cutting them (carefully!) down to size. Thanks - that's interesting - I'm due an upgrade with T-mobile too.
