  • I bought one of these yesterday and it DOESN'T work with the remote control of my NTL box. Sends the picture fine, but it's going back to the shop I'm afraid. It's a shame, as I really want one of these that will work with NTL, but have never seen one for less than £100.

In answer to DollyDouse, provided the second TV in your bedroom has some sort of AV input (e.g. A Scart Socket) then this Sender bundle should work fine.

My configuration is almost exactly that, the portable in my bedroom has only a loop aerial that gets a very poor signal.

The downsides / gotchas to this sender are:

    1) The transmitter needs a spare scart socket, so if your equipment only has one scart out, you will probably also need to invest in a scart splitter and additional cable e.g. output from equipment in to splitter, one cable connects to TV another to Sender. Should cost about a tenner all in.

    2) The transmitter only works with composite signals. So if you have your freeview/sky box configured to output RGB, you'll need to change the settings and lose a little picture quality in the process on your main TV.

    3) Aspect ratio changes aren't transmitted. For example if your portable is widescreen it may not automatically switch aspects as the broadcast goes from 4:3 to 16:9. Also if one TV is widescreen and the other isn't you will probably need to tinker with the settings each time you want to receive on the other TV to prevent cropping or stretching.

Having said that, very good kit for the price.

In answer to Fatfree, I picked mine up from a reasonable sized Tesco which wasn't an "Extra".

In my store (Addlestone, Surrey) it was located between the portable TVs and the stereos. They only had about 3 on the shelf, and had a "New" sticker next to the shelf tag.

Nearly missed it as I was scouring the shelves around the TV antennas, additional remotes and leads section.

As per my reply above - AFAIK available in larger NORMAL Tesco. Least ways I bought mine from a normal one.

Reserved mine at Tesco Extra in Abingdon and picked it up last night (when they found where they had put it).
Works ok with Sky using the IR Extender, but it does NOT like my wireless network..... Good for the price.
  • I bought one last night from Tesco Extra in Watford. Sends sound and picture fine but cant change channel on my Pace NTL box, I assume it is the remote.
    Any ideas?

Just looked at the instructions in the box and it describes the transmitter as having:

"IR-remote IR output 940 nm with ON/OFF keying"

To my mind this sounds like a standard IR transmitter (which uses an on/off pattern via a modulated carrier to send control codes to a unit) rather than IrDA (that uses a 115200 baud signal like IrDA ports on laptops and mobile phones) that some Cable boxes require.

I suspect those that have had sucess with NTL boxes are using the 4000 series of PACE boxes which can accept IR or IrDA, rather than the 1000/2000 series which accept IrDA alone.
