Hi Dalip, have read a couple of pages on this thread but apologise if I'm echoing others advice.

Not sure where you live but if youre near a largest town, they usually have a local foreign supermarket. Try local chinese or indian or polish supermarkets. Because you can buy rice, noodles, herbs/spices, pickles, beans and lentils in larger packs, and really do save lots. Things like ketchup, soya sauce and so on are also a lot cheaper, and can make a cheap meal that bit nicer. Cooking sauces like curry and stir fry are often much better value... and much better quality. Each store tends to stock their 'own' cuisine, and others... my local chinese supermarket, does a great range of indian curries!!! Lots of sweet cakes and things which are gorgeous too.

I was brought up in these places (my dads south american, and lived in india for a few years!) and now I'm finding new supermarkets... Polish supermarkets = cheap GORGEOUS sausages, and cold meats. For some reason all of these shops do a much better range of juices. I bought a juice at Lidls ironically, it was like a smoothie and had lots of added vitamins (a quality which usually means +£2 in normal supermarkets!) Its the best thing ive tasted lol.

Obviously reduced items as well. My town has only 1 supermarket... Waitrose (!) and I don't drive. That said Sunday at 3:45pm I went down and duly bought my 15p Hovis loaf, and 6 fresh doughnuts for 20p, and a hot rotisserie chicken for 50p. The other day i popped in on the off-chance routing around for something cheap for lunch... and found all their yummy sandwiches were reduced to 30p.

Makes me feel like I'm not just eating lentils...

    Hope it helps someone,

Blueopal's spot on. Sacks of rice the size of pillows, great armfuls of coriander for a 20th the price it is in the supermarkets, salt-cod, interesting varieties of fresh chillies, big aubergines, the lot. And good luck on Thurs.

There's a great thread on the OS board (though now getting quite long at 40+ pages), all about sneaky way of saving pennies, such as squashing the low roll, watering down milk, padding out mince dishes with greated carrots or oats,

With prices going up, money saving old style is becoming fashionable.
