Hi Get me out, great advice!
Just swapped my three dogs , who are VERY fussy eaters!!, onto chappie complete(low fat chicken)...at the moment the usual 14kg bag is £14.49 with another 3kg free!!! ...great value & all three dogs love it!!
(I was paying £58 a month for 12kg!!!! on Hills Diet stuff)

Please don't just feed the dogs dried food we lost one of our that way as it blocked her insides up, it might have been cheaper (much cheaper now) but I miss everything about her and so do the kids.Barclaycard 3800

Good point Broken hearted,
We've always eaten a lot of game bought from auctions at country town markets, and there's a lot of work preparing them. On the odd occasion that I've seen a pheasant or partridge hit by a car I've picked that up and we've made a game pie from it.
With something that's been dead for a while you can't really take a chance on eating it yourself, but its an absolute treat for the pooches. They're generally a bit "bashed about" but if you skin them, rather than pluck them, and then just boil them long enogh to get the meat off the bone, the hounds think (or thought, in our case) that all their birthdays had come at once.
And it's better for them.:D

I know what you mean BH & dried all the time is not recommended...ours were on raw meat for 4 years but needed diet as got overweight!!! I get free raw bones from the butchers locally & its their treat!! so no need to buy expensive `shop` treats. They are farm dogs & very active now so seem to be thriving!!0 -
Depends on how much other stuff they are fed. Choc is poison to dogs and kids will share it thinking it being kind!!
My ex's dog is now 17 fed dried all her life but not the cheaper Bakers thats full of ash and crap.
The cheap rolls of dog meat you see are high in water and again hidden cereal.
Speaking from experience of loosing my last dear Westie, westie lung nothing to do with feeding. A gluten free diet, white meat, very little cereal and lots of fresh water. Now you see Richard....my three would eat that complely raw....they ate chicken carcasses for many years as the bone (HAS to be raw!..not cooked as that splinters) is only like cartledge so does them no harm....bit like in the wild really.
Sorry...this thread has gone completely off track!0 -
Richard its just as cheap and less messy to let them eat the little treats the cats bring home for us, nothing like a dead bird on the doorstep to say 'I love you' (yuck)Barclaycard 3800

Hi Ange,
Ours would have eaten them raw too, but poultry and game bones can be a problem for dogs (even when they're raw), so just boiling them long enough to get the meat off the bones was a safe alternative.
In all honesty, they would probably have been fine if we'd just fed them the carcasses but they would just "fuss" around my O.H while she picked the meat from the bones, and they were left with a tasty game supper.
I'm sure Dalip will forgive us for taking her thread off track; it is all about making the most of available funds.

You're probably right there Broken hearted, I did see one of our pooches catch a blackbird and swallow it whole.
I really did think I was hallucinating until it retched some black feathers up later in the day.
That was a little disconcerting because we had a blackbird that would eat currants from our hands.
