Well guys.... before this age of modern technology dogs lived in the wild on birds, rabbits & anything else they could find!!! No cooking or processing!! & cats also eat raw birds, mice etc
We worry too much about the `ideas ` that professionals put in our heads about whats safe or not!! Usually to their gain!! & Vets fees are horrendous!!!

Meanwhile dalip, have you nearby any weekly WI markets where you can buy good old fashioned cheaper veg and eggs. I go each week to get these and then experiment with soups...latest involving a lot of spinach, celery and carrots; just spicing up with cayene, turmeric and mixed herbs. If you're a meat eater, which I'm not, perhaps get some cheaper off cuts of meat to add. Then make big batches to freeze....cheaper and saves on time. In fact you could make up quiches, casseroles (throw in the ol lentils) and soups, all in all very wholesome tasty! And does wonders for the figure!!!!;)0

Hi UTC hope you are well,
Great ideas there....I live in a rural area as well & although farm shops are expensive the farmers markets are really great value. Don`t discount the Lidl & Aldi though as can get good value at low prices & eat very well!!

Have been setting myself new goals recently and did step inside a Lidls a couple of times, a big climb down from waitrose but getting there. I don't find farmer's markets too cheap here but am a total convert to the WI; my friend and I are the youngest there, starting to get scornful looks from the oaps, but hey I've a lot of respect for them and sometimes hold back if someone looks desperate...better to get on the right side of them too!!

Hey Ange, I am in a very rural area too and some of my very kindly neighbours run a barter system, especially with fruit and jams. Someone yesterday left a huge carrier bag of gooseberries (yum!)in my garden; and I can easily help myself to raspberries, so will experiment with jam making this w/e. I find the summer months cheaper overall to get by as people are throwing stuff at you. Have recently bought the book "We'll eat again", love it as its full of simple cheap good food recipes. My mother never stops recanting her memories of the war and her life spent as an evacuee in scotland and feeding was a big problem. For instance, to stop the kids over-eating at the soup kitchens, they would be fed mouldy bread which would prevent them from asking for seconds. While I draw the line at that, there's a lot we can do to eat less and healthier.
Dalip, take note of course!;)

Thanks for all the relpies:D some more helpful than others:p .
We feed our dogs half a tin each per day of tesco premium/with tesco mixer. Substituted by any leftovers,,which works out at about £1.50 a wk for both dogs:eek: .
We eat cheap meats like liver, hearts, breast of lamb,,half shoulders of lamb(for sunday roasts)belly pork. We don't eat breakfast, just a sandwich for lunch. We do love our veg and used to have as many as 11 veg on a sunday we have cut that down to 2 or 3 at the most and changed to frozen(less waste and cheaper). We are going to try lidls and aldi to see if we can get it down. There are 2 things i will not give up for anybody decent toilet tissue;) and anchor butter:rolleyes: .DH cider is going :j as is my cooking larger
.
I have cancelled the pet insur.
Not sure where else i can cut back food wise. We don't have takeaways, although we have been having a fish & chips(DH kebab) on a sat lunchtime, today being the last supper so to speak:rotfl:
Sticks in the throat a bit when DH has worked since he was 16 full time and now all he gets back is £48 a wk.Only ever been to dr once when he had cancer so never really used the NHS.
Just sat here thinking about pawning some jewellery we have round the house.

Hiya Dalip
Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but have you had a look on the freebies and competition boards? Also the 'earn £10 a day' challenge on the DFW board is interesting.
I know this won't help your immediate situation but you may be able to 'bank' some stuff towards Xmas and birthdays.
I'm doing a car boot sale next weekend and also sell bits and bobs on ebay.
The oldstyle board is really good for recipies and ideas to save money on the food.
Best of luck, sending big hugs xx0 -
