    Hi All

SlayerX - congrats on passing phone interview and good luck for the face-to-face.... and a  for the unsympathetic bank! Did you ever take out payment protecction???

Ossireo - on my freecycle there was a discussion on this very topic. Some people like to leave it a while as not everyone is on their computer permanently so you give a chance to people who maybe access emails at library or internet cafe. Then you can pick, sometimes it is for a charity or similar so you may feel you want to give to them. I personally would go for someone who seems keen to get it and mentions specific times when they can collect (assuming this fits in with you) I've only got stuff off freecycle, never given anything but I think half the fun is picking someone. When I email for stuff I always try and give a good reason for getting it, offer specific times to collect (asap) and try and be polite and grateful...not sure it always works but I think it gives me a decent chance of getting something.

I've had, in some ways, a really healthy evening - I rode my bike from work to the cinema, then we walked to the restaurant and then I rode home again, which is loads more cycling than I normally do.....however I had chocolate at the cinema and we went to GBK for a lovely burger so feel have cancelled out cycling.....
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

And feed my interiors addiction ;)

Have any of your Freecycled? How on earth do you pick who to give the item to??

I have - everything from old videos to a large telescope!

In terms of who they went to, the first time I gave them to someone who said they could pick up a bag of videos and be there in half an hour. I thought, "How nice" as everything was really quick, I got rid of some stuff I didn't need and my hall cupboard was cleared very quickly.

However, every time I put something up, the same person would be in touch, "I can be there in half an hour" with some standard line about, "I'm a really big fan of..............." (insert to suit item being freecycled!). On the Sunday, I then saw all my stuff being sold at a car boot by the person who seemed so honest and nice  I don't think I would have minded had they been honest and said, "I'm going to sell it if you don't mind", but when you choose them over (in one case) 40 or 50 other people who appear to really genuinely like and want an item, it does make you a bit annoyed.

I kind of fell away from freecyce after that as I felt a bit 'dirty' (probably the wrong choice of word!) and used and a bit like they were taking me for a mug. Ooooh, 'freecycle made me feel cheap' would make a great tabloid headline, wouldn't it?!

The converse to that is that anything I've received, I really have been grateful for. My Mum got a new lawnmower for her new house (which had a lawn which she's not had for about 15 years!), and I also received some magazines which were fairly specialist (architecture, not adult!).

It took a bit of trial and error to recognise a genuine from a slightly dishonest request. I don't mean to put you off and maybe you don't mind someone selling your stuff, but I was just suprised that some people aren't as honest as I am (hm, no 'halo' smiley here to insert)
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

Hmmm, this could be the root of my problems ... too picky :o ; sometimes even the tiniest most insignifcant things just grate on my nerves & although I tend to ignore/overlook whilst the passion is hot... as it wanes the gratey thing just grows & grows until it becomes completely untenable  .

I know exactly what you mean, but it does depend on what you would find grating. For example waht she says is that you may have on your list "must have full head of hair," but what if he has "large breasts" on his list. Then it starts to feel unfair, because you may be the perfect person except for matching that bit.

So some things are negotiable. But obviously, others are not, e.g. picks nose in public, no sense of humour etc. So you have to re examine what you are looking for and see what can be overlooked. For me, I have loads of things, but I suppose that only kindness and intelligence are non negotiable.

Agree about gratey things though, if it annoys you in the first flush, it's hardly likely to get any better.

Oooh thanks for that insight bathgatebuyer,

it never occurred to me that people would take freebies & then sell them on  that's put me right off so I'd rather just give it to a local charity shop. Love the potential headline by the way :T :rotfl:

I'll agree with you on that front BGB, I have always been a hugely cynical. The majority of mums unwanted stuff I have arranged for a local charity to collect as I 'know' that they do give it to deserving cases that are 'vetted' for want of a better way to put it :) Trouble is they don't take washing machines! Hence listing the washing machine .. had 23 repliesto work through in 1 hour! The one I ended up picking was a lady who had mentioned they would love it for someone they have helped to house through her work and could pick it up tomorrow .. didnt really delve much further then that. Ultimately trying to look at it more from the angle that we have got rid of it and sooner the better :rotfl:
  • I'm cynical by nature! I once had a Uni lecturer (who was a cantankerous, evil, sour-faced old git) tell me that a 'true marvel of the modern world was the level of cynicism in one so young' about me!!! (Glad I'm good at something!)

Perhaps that explains my being single? Cynical or realistic or just a bit bruised by experience? Probably a bit of all three ;) Just a wee sensitive thing who has a hard shell I like to think - very few people get to see that in me!!

You've got every right to be picky! My former gym instructor dumped someone because he trned up for a date in a brand of shoes she didn't like and he seemed 'too keen' I yearn for a man who's over-enthusiastic for me. This was all about 3 years ago and recently when I met her she was sporting a wedding ring and talking about 'her husband'. Not the same guy, but she never compromised on what she wanted. Now she was with a slightly underenthusiastic guy with great trainers.

I know a friend of mine has just went back onto some of the dating websites and, like me, doesn't exactly have high hopes with these things. I tried them a few years ago and I had about 2 responses. There was a really nice guy on there I knew from my gym and I sent him a 'oh hi, I had no idea you were single' message which he responded to and was quite chatty with. I really liked him! I bumped into him recently on the bus and he came over and sat with me and we had a good chat. Then he mentioned, ".....my girlfriend....." and all I heard was 'yada.......yada...' after that. Turns out she's from Outer Mongolia. No joke! If it's not hard enough trying to find a single man in Edinburgh that I actually like, I'm now facing competition from Mongolia :p He was seriously the last guy I really fancied. Now I can barely raise interest!

Calm down ladies, I know you want me ;)

I got into work and my boss is here today (first time in 6wks!) and he immediately said that not one but two mining companies really want me for their projects :T :j

It reminded me why I picked such a specialised degree... Anyway, I've been trying to phone the one I want the most all morning but mine managers are notoriously busy people. I'll give the other one a call tomorrow if I don't hear by then.

On other fronts I haven't really done anything, it's been 40 degrees here over the weekend! I'm going motorbike window shopping at the weekend after I get my license sorted :D

On the cynical front: Yes I am incredibly cynical! I do like to give people the benefit of the doubt first time around but unfortunately am often proved to have been right when they let me down.

On the picky front: It really annoys me when people are so damn picky! I'm really quite easy going about someones appearance and body shape etc as long as we connect mentally. I don't care if she has tiny boobs or wears combat trousers to the pub as long as we have a wicked time together (and the sex is good of course;) )
