Taking own food / drinks into cinema

We always take bottled water and some thing quiet to nibble in with us. I am fussy about my kids having crap I also don't want to store up 'fat problems' for them later so I wouldn't want to buy the sweets and drinks anyway but it's nice to have something to eat as well.

BUT I do think that people take the p**s and take in loads of stuff. The food in the cinema is in packaging designed not to be noisy for other people. There's nothing worse than having to listen to the family behind you each pulling open packets of sweets and crisps or the ones who buy the big value ones who then have to pass them down the line with instructions to take 4 and pass them on! Every time they dip their hands it it grates on my nerves. Plus some things like crisps can be noisy to eat. So far, I've never sat near a person who sucks their crisps!

Probably the cinemas would mind a little less if they weren't then left to pick up the crisps, sweets, wrappers and wipe the seating afterwards.

Puts me off going to the cinema, puts other people off and the cinemas lose our custom.

It shouldn't be necessary to tell people to be sensible and if it is then ban it completely or only let people eat at the cinema in designated areas.
  • I went to the cinema last night and took a couple of 'mixer' sized cans and a couple of choccie bars in my relatively small bag. These were enough to get me through the film, but not so much that the rustling annoyed others.

I also don't see the point in people having buckets of drink, enormous bags of popcorn and sweets, and usually something else as well. I also don't understand places selling ice cream. I like to keep my food until the actual film, but by the time you've sat through all the adverts, it'd be melted!

Why do people feel the need to eat at the cinema?

I go to watch a film, not to eat junk food and sweets, and sometimes all the munching that goes on can be quite irritating. It looks like people are having a whole meal there: jumbo size cola, nachos and huge cartons of popcorn.

Why can't people just seat there and watch the film?

Hear, hear ;) We've never bought food at the cinema or taken it in. We go to the cinema to see the film not eat. The smell of the popcorn always makes my eldest feel sick.

It seems every activity has to be accompanied by eating and drinking these days, something we have copied from the States I suspect (where cars now come with special holders for your fries:rolleyes: ).

Well, I rarely go to the cinema, but on occasion I would take in a beer and a small snack. I don't see how they have any right to stop you UNLESS they make it clear with big signs saying "This is a rip-off area. You must buy our over-priced food here." or something... in which case I just wouldn't *ever* go to the cinema!

I think if you don't like the rules you shouldn't go!

It's not the cinemas that are ripping people off but people who take the p1ss and take in their own food that are doing the ripping off. The cinemas have a bottom line & need to make a profit, if all the tightwads take in their own food then it just pushes up the food costs for everybody else as they will still need to make a profit. Other posters have already explained that they don't make a profit on the movies that they show.

(Also if there are any other Londoners that enjoy going to the cinema without the distraction of other peoples' disgusting food noises, go to the BFI where they don't allow any food at all!)
nothing to see here, move along...

Can I just say - I love this site!

I know this thread started as a bit of a moan, but I've learned about the Vue £1.50 for 2 tickets offer from here and have just booked for my son to go and see Speedracer on Sunday. I didn't know about the offer before as Vue isn't my local cinema, but there is one in Thurrock which is close enough for me.

He never got to see Speedracer when it was out as I couldn't justify the £8 per ticket at Bluewater.

So thank you :T Spendless - my little boy is over the moon (the website even let me select which seats I wanted lol).

    Now.....about the popcorn......

I took DD to Vue today to see Wall-E (thought it was awful, but I've mentioned that on another thread ). I took something to drink and some sweets in my bag, but I did get her some ice cream - I gave her the choice of ice cream or popcorn. I didn't pay for her ticket anyway thanks to Orange, so I saved money anyway.

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
