Well, I decided to take the plunge and yesterday morning sent a letter first class recorded delivery to halifax claiming 1200 of charges. This evening I have got in the house and have been amazed to find 3 voice mails from halifax asking me to call them about it (!) This has got to eitrher be a very good sign or a very bad one!
very interesting, so when you have spoken to them post up what they say.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

  • i have just rang the halifax to ask for a list of my charges which they are going to send free of charge, fingers crossed, ican get charges back.
  • Hi, thanks for the response.

I haven't thought of cancelling the Direct Debits/Standing Orders but most of them are for providers that only want DDs etc.

In relation to "manipulation", it is not the dates that they are moving but deciding when to pay out or refuse to do so (both incur charges). There are times when there is no reason why some smaller charges are refused but now and again a big DD is paid - thus putting us into the red further. We have had situations where on a list of charges the earlier smaller sums that fell to be paid are not paid but later larger ones are. Mind you I am probably getting a little paranoid but it seems odd - they also.

In relation to the email to the Ombudsman, I went through the contact box on his webpage. I got an acknowledgement (received on 15 June) but no one has been in touch.

Does anyone have any advice on changing banks i.e. the pitfalls etc. - things to watch out for.

    Thanks
  • I wrote to claim a refund of £950 bank charges from Cahoot (part of Abbey) back in March 2009. a few weeks later, I wrote again - they said they had not received the first one! Eventually, after my giving all my details in they agreed to give me £1000 - success I thought! However, since the letter dated 3rd June, and several phone calls on my part, and several unfulfilled promises on their part of when it will be in my bank account - different dates everytime - I am still waiting. I feel they are just taking the micky out of me now. has anyone managed to successfully get a refund from either Cahoot or Abbey?

You need to start a claim and complete an income and expenditure. You need to put this down in writing. Explain how the problem began and the reasons why you did not have sufficient funds to cover priority debt arrears and how the charges affected your ability to pay. Furthermore, explain you family circumstances and that the tutor is essential and is having a major impact on your child who is autistic.
And finally, keep us updated on how you get on.
thanks for the info and will definitely update you,it'll be slow for i have loads of commitments (i.e. my son and housing...)

Hi first time on here and decided after my bank knocked me back for financial hardship with my bank charges to take them for as much as i can, ( have already appealed to the financial ombudsman). After they knocked me back i have now put in a claim for ppi which was sold to me more than 7 years ago, what my chances of winning this? My case i spoke about earlier is a claim i put in from February 2007 which dates back to Feb 01, can i also claim for the bank charges i have received since then which seem to be mounting?
  • Hi, Can anyone help, I am having a lot of problems with Nationwide Building Society paying me back £1400 + I started my claim in June 2008 and was originally told that due to court hearing etc all claims were being put on hold pending court outcome etc. At that time I told them I qualifyed as a Hardship case but they still refused to deal with my case.

Out of the blue, last month I got a letter saying that they did not originally send me a statement of means form to complete and if I completed this they would review my case.

Anyway only a week ago after doing all that they still refused it saying unfortunately our decision remains the same as the Statement of Means Form indicates that I have a surplus amount between my income and expenditure. Its only £30!! Also I think I have not filled it in correctly, I was given no assistance of guidance as to how to fill this in properly, I think they have tricked me, so they can get away with not paying out.

What can I do, I have contacted the FOS and been given a reference no and I have to complete their form etc but told it could take months for them to contact Nationwide. I'm receiving Carer's allowance & on HB, what can I do, I'm getting depressed about it as I was expecting to get my charges back, as I have read thousands of others have done so (good luck to them to & well done!)

They are still charging me £30 a time when I even go over drawn by a few pounds, only last month I had two lots of charges, another £60 its a joke, I'm struggling to meet my obligations and each time they do this it sets me back again.

I put in a claim back to 2005, I couldn't get any online statements backed dated prior to this. They promised to send me earlier ones but nothing has been received and Martin Lewis said on GMTV this morning to claim back to July 2001

Thank you & also has anyone had a payout from Nationwide, they certainly seem very determined not to pay me a penny!
  • Also can you claim for bank charges for old accounts Bank or Credit Cards that have since been closed but where you still owe the bank money, surely if you made a claim for bank charges they would deduct them from what you owe them? Is that how it works, sorry I don't know too much about what would happen regarding old closed accounts where there is a debt owing to the Bank.

What about charges from a Ltd Company bank account where the Ltd Company has been dissolved, can you still claim as one of the account signatures/former Director etc?

    Hello All

I have put in a case of hardship with Natwest for £1400 worth of charges and i am still getting charged at present for being over my overdraft limit. I recieved a letter saying that i was not in hardship because i was £60 in credit after i had paid my bills.

I have not made arrangements with Natwest to try and pay £130 per month to get my overdraft within its overdraft limit, which is £950, this will send me over my £60 credit so does that mean i would possibly be a better hardship case?

    Any help would be great

    Hi,

I recently put in a claim under hardship with HSBC for £1880, and after filling in the income and expenditure form, they have finally come back and said I'm not in hardship (not sure how they got to that one, I've got a court summons from my council tax £800, and I'm £500 in arrears with rent, plus £200 deficit on my account every month after their stupid charges have been deducted), but they will give me a 'goodwill refund of £250.' I'd already written to the FOS before I received this letter, because prior to this, HSBC kept trying to fob me off, and have sent me a number of letters in response to my one letter, which I thought was out of order and deliberately confusing. Anyway, so FOS haven't got back to me yet, as obviously they're swamped, but I would really like some advice on what to do now. £250 is a joke, but I know Natweststaffmember has said on here before that it's best to accept the offer and then negotiate for more. Any advice on how I should go about this or if this is definitely the right way to proceed? I've also updated the FOS via email on the latest developments, and sent them copies of the arrears statements so they can see I'm in hardship. Do you think I should send these to HSBC and ask them to re-assess the £250?
What I did find funny is that they said 'you're not in hardship and we won't be refunding you under the hardship waiver, but we will give you a £250 refund.' Sounds like a round-about way of saying they're guilty as charged...

    Any help much appreciated. Thanks!
