thanks custardy, the way they used the word 'opt-out' just confused me. how was the first day at work like, did you do it with someone so they can show you the area your covering/where to pickup the aditional letters or just got stuck in. i really cant wait to get started, i've not slept much at all since finding out i've been offered the positionSavings Target: 100K by 2015

well '1st day' is induction at whatever training facility your area have
IIRC i had 1 week mon-fri office induction
then i was in the delivery office the next week
the next week was out buddied up with another postie on a duty
the next week was out on delivery solo
however the training used to be a lot longer,i would expect it to be shorter again
when you go out on deliveries your self make sure you know about the route eg pouch box arrangements(where your mail is stored en route),toilets!,get a map (i usually print one off for the guys from multimap)
you will find it hard at 1st and the routes will seem long
however you soon get into the swing0 -
thanks for the quick & thourough response. so theres a chance i wont be delivering letters for the first one or '2' weekswell '1st day' is induction at whatever training facility your area have

what sort of duties did you have to do when you was in the office. and ye indeed will be really important to know the pouch box arrangements otherwise i wont be able to deliver all the mail
as you say though the more i learn/do my route the quicker i'll be at my job; i'd expect on the first few days of delivering letters i'd take 1hr 30mins more than everyone else at minimum

well technically it shouldnt matter knowing the pouch boxes.as the route 'should' flow and the mail leads you to the pouch boxes
however it doesnt always work like that
yes it will take you longer,as for the routes it varies massivly
my office covers everything from rural where you drive between deliveries right up to heavily populated tenement areas
from deprived areas right up to houses worth well over £1 million a shot
each type of delivery has its pro's and cons
big posh areas are nice but can have big long drives
flats have loads of stairs(obviously) but at least you are dry in the rain0 -
In our office, they're offering "paydowns" for full time staff to take a lump sum payment to give up thier contract and go part time. Royal mail dont want full time staff anymore, its not cost efficient for them. ideally they want the mail to come in already sequence sorted to cut down on manual sorting then just have part time staff delivering.0

Hi all, have just read through this thread, OH had and interview and did all the work entry checks last week but has had an email today to say sorry you did pass your assessment but there are no vacancies. Ive noticed that a couple of people on here have had that email but then had job offers. Has he still hope of a job? Am really hoping so as he is gutted. Finally, I can see you crystal clear0

how long on avg does it take to sort the mail out ;o pretty poop, about them stopping the full time because with part time, you dont really have much time to take up any other jobs since it's from 10pm - 2pm; mon-fri/satSavings Target: 100K by 2015

well it depends on what part you are talking about
at our office the guys hit the IPS(inward primary sorting) @ 0615
iirc they should be off the primary for about 0800
sorry im rusty on the times now as they have changed since i did walks
then they put up their mail
back up for missorts
back to their frames and then the final missort run is around 0930-0945
then tie down and get out asap
so in theory PT staff come in at 1000 and they are about the same stage as the FT guys
from what ive heard, the walk sequencing machines dont do the amount of mail they predicted
nor can they sort stairs
so we shall see what happens as they come in0 -
ah damn, so i guess i'll be at the depot for more than half of my shift
cheersfor the quick/comprehensive response Savings Target: 100K by 2015

well not really,if your starting at 10am(i assume) and finish at 2pm and you are doing a 3.5 hour delivery span(standard delivery) then you cannot0
