Possible stupid wireless router question
Comments
-
Right this is going to be fun.....your laptop has the wireless built into it you do not need the USB stick
is your router plugged into your modem??
turn off your modem turn off your router
connect the router to the modem via the ethernet cable
turn on modem wait untill its finishes all its checks then turn on the router
once its finished all its checks (the router) you should see a light on showing it can see the internet (let me know then we can carry on)If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -

She would be better following the instructions given by Netgear available on their support website here.
Download the user manual for your particular model and version. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
The OP has foolishly installed the USB wireless dongle that came with the router. This needs to be un-installed and the user manuals need to be read. It's easy if you actually read the instructions.
Thanks everyone but I think I've managed it now.
espresso - I'm not foolish, like I said at the beginning I don't know much about computers, I'm sure there are things that you don't know about, and I think to be honest that post was a bit rude. If I knew what I was doing I wouldn't be here asking for help would I?Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -

You don't need to know anything about computers to read and follow the instructions given by Netgear in their user manual or to read the specification on your Sony laptop telling you that it has wireless built-in!
I hope that you have now read the relevant part of the user manual which tells you how to set up WPA encryption to make your network secure, otherwise your data and bandwidth is available to anyone!

The user manual was rubbish, I bought a pre-owned router that PC world assured me was all present and correct but now I think that the full user manual is missing, there is a small leaflet which tells you how to install the usb adapter but that's all, nothing that says anything about WPA encryption!!
Does anyone know how I do this please?? Thanks!Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -

I provided a link to where you can download the full user manual. Perhaps you didn't read it. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
connect your laptop via ethernet to the router....type in this ip address in your internet explorer bar 192.168.0.1 though maybe 192.168.1.1!!
it will the ask you for a username and password...both will be the word admin (in lowercase)
go to the wireless security settings......select WEP..put in a keyword (anything you like) and it will ask which key you want to use.....just use number 1
it will the give you a number note down that number and the keyword
save settings
disconnect your laptop and let it connect via wireless again
when you try to connect this time (you will have to tell your laptop to connect to it) it will ask you for the keyword or number (the one you typed into the wireless settings (just one not both)
type it in and you'll connect
(as simple as i can make it)If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

Reading the user manual will be much more productive as your information is incorrect. Why do you think that companies provide user manuals?

and why is it incorrect? seeing as i'm sat on my wireless laptop with wep encryption??? doing exactly what i just saidIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
