Put said stinky shoes/trainers in a carrier bag and put them in the freezer overnight. The freezing kills the bacteria and then when at room temp put bicarb in overnight and hoover the following morning. You should be twinkle toes again after that!

Finally got round to doing this.

Put bicarb into the shoes, put them into a carrier bag. Tied a knot in the bag and put them in the freezer. 2 days later, took them out, the smell seemed fine, and I thought "brilliant". Until they thawed...

When they thawed out, the reek was as bad as it used to be.

I didn't brush the bicarb in, only sprinkled it. I did not remove the soles from the shoes either.

    Whats next?

    Thanks.

    Hello All

I am really hoping to get some good tips on how to stop my hubbies shoes from smelling. He made the mistake of wearing his boots without socks and then getting rained on, it has equalled in the most vile smelling boots ever.

Are there any good tips on getting rid of the smell?

  • surgical spirit is a good thing for cleaning out the insides of shoes. what sort of boots are they?? i put no end of footwear in the washing machine but havent ever done it with boots. i would use surgical spirit then odour eaters. let us know how you get on. of course there is always the 'bin them' method .
  • You could try leaving bicarbonate of soda in them overnight, and then remove the resdue the next day. Bicarb has a multitude of household uses and is relatively cheap and environmentally friendly!

    Thanks for the ideas.

Will try all of them. The boots have a suede type lining inside and the inner sole doesn't come out! Wish me luck!!!!!!!!

I had a pair of trainers that got soaked one holiday. Wet reacted with the glue and made them smell like cat pee!

Bunged in LOADS of bicarb in them and it's got rid of the smell. I use it routinely in my kitchen bin to help absorb the odour of baby nappies!

I am having major issues with stinky shoes in my house at the moment, particularly trainers and am looking for some seriously cheap ways to get rid of the smell without throwing any of the shoes out.

Up til now I have tried febreeze, washing them in the machine, odor kill disinfectant solution, bicarbonate of soda and hanging them on the line to dry. Any cheap tips that could sort out the smell?

Hmmm.... since you've already tried bicarb I'm out of ideas. My hubby has got really stinky work boots :o and bicarb is the only thing I found that helps. I sprinkle a generous amount in to the shoe and leaves it there over night. Then in the morning before he goes to work I hoover it out and it doesn't smell at all. For how long are you leaving the bicarb in?

Is there a possibility that the person with the smelly shoes has a foot fungal or any other infection that causes the smell? It might be worth paying a visit to the doctor and have the feet checked out

    Hi ali-t,

With trainers I tend to throw them in the washing machine as I find it's the only way to get them really clean again and remove any smell, especially if one of the children has got them wet at some stage and they've not been dried out properly.

These earlier threads may give you some more ideas:

    Smelly trainers

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.
