Bread mix thread

Has anybody tried these? They are 79p for 1kg, which makes 2 loaves. I saw granary, ciabatta and sunflower seed packs.

I have been using the Hovis granary breadmixes which are on special offer at Asda (75p each or 2 for £1) and make a 500g loaf as well. Aldi breadmixes work out 10p a loaf cheaper, which is all good by me!

I have been using Sainsburys own flour with yeast etc but have just tried the Aldi Granary bread mix this morning. It is OK but I have found the bread to be slightly heavy compared to what I have made previously. I bought a bread mix pack of white, seeded and granary but only tried the granary so far. Personally I wouldn't buy the granary one again but that is my personal taste. Will post again when I have tried the white and seeded.
  • I have not tried aldis bread mixes. the hovis granary is quite good. But what I do now is buy the granary bread flour and add half a cup to 2 and a half cups of white bread flour. That makes a nice airy but interesting laof. Not stodgy like the white loaves but not too heavy and crunchy as the all granary ones seem to be.

I used the Lidl bread mixes when I had reduced cooking and storage facilities. We didn't mind them being a little bit heavier, but we did find them rather salty.

I bought the Multi Grain mix today (green bag, made by LANDGUT), was 99p for a 1000g bag which makes 2 loaves.

It says to use 'Normal/Browing:Middle or Dark' on the back of the bag?

As I assume this is for continental breadmakers would you bake this on a large loaf, whole wheat and medium colour setting ( I have a Morphy Richards fastbake)?

Half a bag makes one 2lb loaf in the fastbake and I set it to medium.

These work really well if you just do the dough in the machine and finish it in the oven. ;)

Thanks, shall give it a go tomorrow.

Not sure about the finishing off in the oven bit though, shall give it a go as normal in the bread maker for now.

If I start putting the dough in the oven I think I'll end up not using the bread maker.

I only use the BM to make the dough now as I didn't like the shape of the loaves and prefer the crusts when it's done in the oven.

Yep, I know what you mean about the shape.

I took the paddle out as soon as it had stopped kneading last time so there wasn't that huge hole in the bottom

Risking sounding completely thick... when do you know to take the dough out and do you knead and shape and let it prove again/ how long would you cook a 2lb loaf for and on what temp?:o

if you put it on the dough setting, it'll stop when its done. just take out the dough, knead it for a couple of mins, then shape into buns, or put in a 2lb loaf tin, leave to rise again for about 30-45 mins and thin put in the oven.it takes about 20mins at 170/180 x
