how long do you cook for?
  • I just went back to Aldi to get some more mix and they had new varieties in and they were priced at 78p (sorry for the mistake before) - today they had sunflower seed, white, ciabatta, wholemeal and multigrain. I got 7 packets in all as I reckon that that will make 14 loaves at a total cost of £5.46 - wheras 14 loaves from the bakery, if I include speciality type bread would cost me at least £22 but maybe even £35 (ciabatta and sunflower or multigrain types are more expensive). Even 14 Kinsgmill type loaves would be about £15.

Can you make this bread without a fancy kenwood dough thingy or a bread maker. I do not possess any fancy kitchen gadgets!! Would it be possible to add 'extras' to the mix such as garlic to the ciabatta?
    Thanks in advance

  • I apologize in advance if you all know about this stuff already, but I was in Aldi last week and they had bread mixes made by their "The Pantry" range. I can't remember exactly how much they were but I think it was 68p for a large bag of mix. They had white, wholemeal and multigrain. I got the multigrain and made it last night and it was absolutely fabulous! The packet made two HUGE loaves weighing 850g each and they were really easy to make - I used my Kenwood dough hook to do the kneading and the whole process only took about 3 hours from initial mixing to taking the hot bread out of the oven. Given that my local bakery type bread shop charges £1.50 for a large homestyle baked loaf I reckon that the Aldi stuff is really MSE! I sometimes find that bread mixes taste a bit yeasty but this was really nice!

That looks like a bargain :T I'll add this to the exsisting bread mix thread ;)

You could easily knead by hand - I was just being lazy doing it in the Kenwood! I'm sure you can add anything like garlic etc but I think you add it add it after it has risen and you knead it after knocking it down, but others may do it differently.

My aldi don't sell bread flour but this is Bread mix and it isn't by the flour and stuff its on its own stand. I think they are promoting it at the moment so you might want to have another look. The bags are different colours for each type of bread mix - red green brown yellow and blue.

Depends on the size loaf you are doing - usually between half an hour and an hour you have just got to keep an eye on it - you know it is cooked when you tap the loaf on the bottom and it sounds hollow, if it dosent just pop back in for a while
