  • My home phone recently broke. Does anybody know if i could get a free one from anywhere, I've been looking on amazon and they all seem to be about £20 and I would like to try and get one free or for very cheap.

    thanks. :money:

    Freecycle, Freegle, Gumtree, Argos (552/6527)?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Primus have only undertaken to allow the use of indirect access providers like 18185 until the end of this year.
If I understand you corrctly are you saying that Primus customers will not be able to use the overrider 18185 from 2013? If so where is your source for this please?

MSE got an agreement with Primus it would last until at least end of 2012.

"Allows override providers? Yes (Gave MSE written guarantee lasting until at least Dec 2012) "

But if they unbundle your line(llu) you want be able to use it indirectly anyway.

Anyone know if this is going to be extended? My parents are looking for the cheapest home phone provider, I suggested Primus but obviously they won't change unless the override function will be available throughout their 12 month contract.

I don't know what you mean by 'unbundle my line'. It is already unbundled, as Primus is an llu. I don't see what MSE have to do with anything either. My contract is with Primus, and regardless of what Primus may or may not have promised MSE they are not under any obligation to them regarding overriders. In any case I would have thought that having an llu using BT infrastructure automatically entitles me to use an overrider if I choose. I would have thought Primus have no technical means of blocking such calls. The problem as I understand it lies with non-BT lines where a provider such as Virgin can directly block the use of overriders.

Thanks for the question Snapelover - I'll get in touch with Primus to ask, and post back when I know.

    Many thanks,

My elderly neighbour is currently with Talk Talk and paying for TT plus which gives her unlimited UK calls and Broadband, she also pays for the International Boost - all for £22.75 per month. Her contract expires soon and she would like the same phone package but without broadband. I negotiated this rate for her before she entered into her current contract and she asked me to check around to see what the best deal is for her now.

BT have quoted a figure of £24.70 for line rental, anytime calls and the International Freedom feature but they also want to charge a £40 connection fee. Not a great incentive to return to BT.

I'm still waiting for a reply to my email from TT. I'm ashamed to admit that I could not work out a price from their website information as everything seemed to include TV and I could not find a phone only package with 24/7 calls. The other problem was that I could not face another phonecall with the TT customer service staff as I have had a few run ins with them recently.

When looking through some posts I noticed that somebody provided the email of the BT CEO, does anybody have the email address of the TT CEO as I would like to give him my views on the usefulness of their support staff.

Primus use llu and non llu

LLU is where a provider takes over the running of the line etc from BT, this usually involves connecting the line to the provider's own equipment in the telephone exchange. So if they want to block 18185 access they can easily do so just like Talk Talk have done, and i have seen reports that Primus have done the same on some llu lines.

Even if the lines are non llu a supplier other then BT can have indirect access barred if they so desire.Only BT proper have to offer indirect access.

Indirect access numbers like 18185 have never worked on Virgin Media ,so they have no need to block them.

MSE were just being helpful in finding out as its one of their recommendations.
