Did you get changed over to Plusnet? If so, how much has your bill ended up costing, if you don't mind me asking? I must look up Martin's link for Plusnet now that I am back from my holidays!

I have just got my broadband sorted with Plusnet. Although I have my line rental with BT and I was advised online with a Plusnet representative that the £25 fee would be waived and I would get the first three months free I didn't. I was told by the operator on the telephone that I could either pay £6.49 a month for the first three months or pay the £25 fee so I chose to pay £6.49 a month for the first three months as this was cheaper! My broadband ended up costing £6.49 * 3 + £12.99 * 9 + £4.99 for p&p for the router which is apparently mine to keep after 12 months = £141.37, £11.78 a month! :j :money:

If I hadn't said I would pay the first three months at £6.49 rather than having them free I would have cost myself £5.53 extra so in affect the p&p for the router, £4.99, has actually cost me nothing!

    I had been paying O2 £15.29 a month for broadband, therefore I have saved £15.29 - £11.78 a month = £3.51 a month / £42.12 annually! :j

I have changed BT to BT basic so instead of paying them £15.65 a month I will be paying £4.80 a month, saving £10.85 a month / £130.20 annually! :j :money:

Total savings for broadband and line rental £14.36 a month / £172.32 annually! :j :money:  The only probably is my electric is going up by almost 20% and it is £64 a month at the moment so my savings will cover the increase in my electric!

  • Does anyone know if any provider allows a package without a year contract. I have a phoneline installed but not connected at present as I was abroad for a few years, the house was let and tenants didnt want phone. I am back now but only need a phone for a few months. Bt say they can only offer a year contract. Any ideas. Unfortunately I also live on a West coast island so not all services available to me.

Your island location might still be a problem though.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Since joining following an MSE weekly newsletter in March, have had nothing but problems, resulting in my complaint now sitting with the Ombudsman (as New Call Telecom, who own Primus, couldn't be bothered to respond). My advice? STAY AWAY FROM THEM! Even though customer services has now been relocated to the UK following hundreds of complaints about the service when it was located in India, they still don't seem to be able to get things right. I wish I had stayed with BT (who I've now gone back to), I thought it would be cheaper to move away but it's definitely been more stressful. And now that I've gone to BT, with cashback it's costing me £109 for a year (£9.08/month) and I get caller display and 1571 thrown in for free (with Primus you have to pay £2.50/mth for caller display alone) so it's actually working out cheaper. :j
  • I'm new to the site and may be reading things wrongly, but it seems to me that the article concentrates on line rentals with hardly a mention of call connection charges. All the comparison sites seem to be the same.

Now I may be one of nature's pedants, but it seems to me that this charge can easily add £££s to your bill, for example if you make 50 chargable calls a month that's around another £5.00 to your bill.

There has to be a point where, unless there are providers who don't impose this charge, it would be more economical to go for an "all calls inclusive package" - but I don't see a mention of this
  • Has anyone had experience of Microtalk? They cold called me today saying what a big company they were, but I have never heard of them and my friends and colleagues have never mentioned them either. Their rates are cheap, cheap of course, but I would not sign up to a company without knowing what their service is like.
