    Sure :)

    If you're in a Market 2 or 3 area I don't think you'd need worry.

I need to worry, I am in market 1.
  • Needed a new phone line installed for broadband so contacted BT who said the charge would be £130. Went into local Post Office grabbed a leaflet rang their call centre (0800 092 0514)and quoted the branch code on back of leaflet (0047023). To my surprise they are charging only £60 for the same BT line to be installed. In fact it is the BT engineer who came to install. Why would anyone pay an extra £70 for the same service. As for the line rental costs it is still over £2 cheaper than BT per month.
  • Can an override provider be used on an orange phone land line?

If Indirect Access is barred you can use http://18185.co.uk/rates.php via its Freephone Access Number. Note different rates apply.

You can also use the 0844/0871 access numbers mentioned in the MSE Call Checkers at whatever rate Orange charge to call them.

"Install or activate a new line – depending on your situation, we may have to install a new phone line or activate an old one. The standard cost for a new line is £112.34, subject to survey. However, for all orders placed from 17 August through to 16 November, this will be reduced to only £60. Of course, if there’s an old line that’s still active, we will try to reconnect this and you might not have to pay."

Plus there is no minimum term but if you cancel within 6 months they may charge £15.
  • Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help/explain something to me please?

I'm moving into a new property soon. I can see that the property has a sky dish on it.

I've rung sky looking to get their line rental/b'band/tv package and they say it'll take 2 weeks to install a new phone line and 2 weeks after that to install sky.

Equally, I've been on the Plusnet website and done a search on the address and they say they'll need to isntall a new phone line costing £45.

What I don't understand is, why do they need to install a new phone line? Surely there must have been a phone line already at the property, especially if the previous occupant had sky? The property isn't new build so must have a physical landline?? Am I missing something?

I don't have much understanding of the process, but surely whoever provides it will need to just come round the property/nearest exchange and flick a switch to reconnent?

I have an orange mobile so am now thinking about getting line rental and b'band through them as they seem cheapest (With my orange discount) is that a wise option?

    Thanks in advance

There is no requirement to have a landline just because you have Sky TV.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

You need a an active Plusnet or other BT compatible landline to get Plusnet Broadband.

If Primus lines are no longer BT compatible eg unbundled LLU then this could be the reason. If there still BT compatible then it should not be a problem.
And how did Primus get hold of you to tell you this?

*shrug* All I know is I fronted up on their order-our-stuff phone line as if I already had a Primus phone line, and was told "sorry sir, we don't support use of Primus landlines with our broadband service any more", and ended up ringing off with a comment to whit "guess I'm stuck with them til the contract runs out then... well, see you in 18 months". At no point did they try and grab me as a potential customer even then...

Regardless of what the truth of the situation is, if they're not prepared to sell it to me, it's as good as it being impossible, isn't it! I can't force them to hook up their particular brand of retailed BT ADSL coverage to my gaff, can I?

Maybe the phone op was told the wrong thing. Maybe it IS actually Plusnet policy and/or something they literally cannot do now. Or perhaps they saw through my gossamer-thin web of lies and knew that I would probably be back. But fact is I went there sounding for all the world like someone who already had the line in, and was told I couldn't get that service even before they took my postcode.

Also, I was getting pretty g@dd&mn desperate for phone & broadband at that point, running my mobile data plan ragged (with phone as mobile hotspot) and annoying my family by popping in to borrow a cup of wi-fi, and well aware it may take a further two weeks for the company to get it fully set up, so I rang back a couple minutes later from a different phone and just ordered up their combined package.

Heck, anyway, it's proven almost worth it for the additional free calls... and a little bit for the reduction in hassle.

I note with interest that the article page has been extensively refurbished, but this joint offer is still listed - does that imply that someone's investigated it and found out that it's still in place? Because I'd like to know who's lying (intentionally or accidentally) to me here.

Take note that it's £11.49 for the first 10Gb, and £5 for every 5Gb after

Or you could, as I'm pondering if this "scheduling" malarkey doesn't work out, pre-pay the fiver and get an extra FIFTY gigs of daytime transfer per month. If you think you're likely to regularly use even 15.01Gb it'd be worth it. It's still a pretty good price for a 60Gb cap, you still get the unlimited overnights, and it still expands at £5 per 5Gb if you somehow exceed THAT as well, rather than it being a hard-cap that cuts you off.

Did you get changed over to Plusnet? If so, how much has your bill ended up costing, if you don't mind me asking? I must look up Martin's link for Plusnet now that I am back from my holidays!
