Just to keep hope for others trying to save with current packages. I too called BT 1 month AFTER my 12 month contract for Free Evenings & Weekends automatically renewed, firstly told them that I hadn't been contacted regarding renewal, stated that I wished to end my free evening package and go to basic and they kindly assured that I would not be charged!
Then proceeded to ask if they could offer a better deal. Was transferred to another dept. and told them about Primus (They had never heard of) but without any hassle said that they could do either £8.54 for same deal, or £12.57 for Anytime package, both including Line Rental and neither tied in to any contract.
I think you may be wrong on that point. A 12 month contract is almost certain.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Well, in that case the girl I was speaking to may hope that the calls aren't recorded!!
She clearly said that I would not be tied in and that I can change / cancel my product whenever I wished if I wasn't entirely happy. Mind you I DID have my flirty voice on.....

That's why I was surprised and thought that it's an offer not to be missed! I hope others have the same luck and double-check before ending the call!

Heinz, I do agree with your scepticism, however!! :)

Hi i have been reading through this tread as my 12 month contract is up with BT at last.
I was looking to go to O2 as I have BB with them but never use the landline to make calls apart from 0800 or 0845/0870 when it is free. I have been in credit now for 14 months with BT and am paying £10 a month which is reducing the credit little by little each month. Spoke to them today about having the credit payed back and they said they couldn't do that:mad: as my next quarterly bill is due (the last quarter)
So I am all set to go to Primus but want to know how long the process takes and how much notice I need to give BT.

Also will I receive my credit balance from BT or will it role over to Primus??

I was just about to sign up for Primus Saver deal and discovered they have what they call 'auto roll over'. This means that, without warning after 12 months, they lock you in for another 12 months. So, if you go back after the initial 12 months they will always defer you to the next 12 months period end or pay a penalty. Clever eh and worth their while to try and auto lock in the unsuspecting at the headline price!! Needless to say I didn't sign up but a warning to others. Hopefully this anti competitive practice will be outlawed soon, with tie in ending after the intially agreed period has expired?!! I do not think they are only ones who now do this either so it is worth checking!
  • Can anyone help me with cheap connection charge? My son (sky employee) is moving into his own flat and therefore taking his staff acct with him - boo hoo.. but I have just found out this also includes my line rental and phone no.!! I now have to get a new phone no and connection and according to sky - can take them 14 days to re-connect me with a charge of £39!! - is there anyone who would know of any deals out there that does not include a connection charge. Its bad enough that I will be losing my own no. but to pay sky to be re-connected just goes against the grain! I am driven mad with frustration trying to speak to sky about this and understand why I have to wait 14 days to re-connect equipment that they are dis-connecting. They blame BT as they have to use BT Openreach but does not help me. Any advice would be welcome.

I'd blame your son, not Sky or BT. What an unreasonable way to treat your parent!

I agree with the post below yours nice son! LOL!

Why is your son effectively moving your number to a new property as if you have all moved house? was it all his number and contract? If not then he is taking the number with him to avoid him having to pay a new re-connection fee?

sister moved into new property and has no phone connection, BT are requeting a fee of £69 setup fee and then theres the monthlylandline and braodbandcharges ontop. is the fee a standard price everywhere and does anyone have any good experience with Primus, they're the cheapest, but the others are BT are more expensive an talktalk are asking for a 24month comitmentfor 18.48/mnth for landline and broadband.

any advice/experiences what other companies that have a good service with value for money??

BT's standard price is £124.99 but has a £29.99 offer on at the moment.

You will not avoid line rental and broadband charges in advance. That's standard.

Well... i've been trying to set up an account with Primus for the best part of 2 weeks.... was told when i signed up i would get a confirmation within 48 hours... nearly 2 weeks on and lots of calls to chase still nothing, was told would be definitely today then there would be a 14-21 day wait to get the line active... (no install needed)...rang today after still no confirmation email to be told my account STILL hadn't been processed. Told them to cancel it, fed up of waiting! I guess you get what you pay for... hopeless! Then they wouldn't let me cancel until the account was set up and that i couldn't use another provider until that was done, told them seeing as they had done an excellent job of not creating an account for so long that they could surely continue to NOT create an account! After much arguing and discussion with the call centre in India (so much scripted conversation never answered my questions!!) They have 'sent an email' to stop my account being processed. We'll see how that goes :( Just gonna go with BT... at least they can get the phone line up and running in a few hours rather than weeks if i went with someone else..... urgh! Such hassle as if moving into my own house for the first time wasn't stressful enough!!!!

Any one had a similar experience with Primus? Wish O2 landline was up and running sooner seeing as i have mobile phone and broadband (once i have the landline) with them. Ho hum!
