Until O2 come on board with their landline offer it looks like I will have to pay for evening calls for the next month. I was going to sign up for Primus Saver but it is a 12 month contract - so that doesn't look much good. Is there anything similar which doesn't have such a long tie in period?

EDIT : I already have 18185 setup - so at worst it is 5p a call at the moment.

The Ts and Cs for Primus Saver are here

    http://www.primussaver.co.uk/pdfs/saver_t&cs.pdf

Para 1.3 and para 11.1.3 both indicate that the CPS agreement can be terminated by giving 30 days notice.

Thanks for that, Odd that when you sign up you agree to having a 12 month contract - when it appears it is not.
  • Anybody got a better provider for line rental than BT, don't really use my home phone but am still being charged £12.79p a month, I have broadband and mobile with o2 which I am happy with, and T.V. with sky.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
  • Hello,

I'm moving into a new property and need a new phone line installed in order to get broadband. As I need a new line this seems to limit me in choosing a cheap phone/broadband provider. BT charge £124.99 to install a new line and Talk Talk have offered £59.99. So Talk Talk win. This is for their 'essentials' package at £19.49 but ties me into a 24 month contract, rather than the usual 18 months.

Does anyone knows of any better deals I'm not aware of? Is 24 months a complete rip-off?

    Thanks :)

Hi - I haven't read through the hundreds of posts on this thread so apologies if it's a repeat.

Summary: You can beat the Primus monthly cost (£9.15) with BT (£8.54)

I've been on BT's "Unlimited Evening & Weekend" plan for 2 years now at a cost of around £12 per month. Since my contract is up for renewal at the end of this month, I was about to change to the Primus Saver (via Homephone Choices) for £9.15 but decided to call BT to check whether I'd incur any exit fees and if I needed to give written notice.

After being informed that I'd have to pay something like £5.89 (because I had 20 days left on my contract), I said ok and explained I would be changing to a similar package to BT's for £9.15

At this point, the girl on the other end hastily offer me the same Free Evening and Weekend calls plan for £8.54 per month. Of course, it's another 12 month contract, but for out-and-out monthly cost, it beats Primus.

BT is still more expensive for "per minute" calls than Primus, but then I just use a CPS like 1899 or 18185.

As others have mentioned, from April 1st, BT are reducing the window of time where free calls are included:

    Mon-Friday = 7pm to 7am
Weekends = 7pm (Fri) to Midnight on Sunday

So this is worth bearing in mind. Anyhow, it just goes to show that it's worth speaking to your current provider to get a better deal before jumping on the Primus bandwagon :)

(also just reduced my O2 broadband from £12.50 to £7.50 just by threatening to leave ... could have gone down to £5 per month but didn't know anyone on an o2 mobile contract!)

    Cheers

Technically, BT's weekends (for the purpose of inclusive weekend calls within the Unlimited Weekend Calls Plan) are midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes, but timboid is including evening calls, so as he has included Friday from 7 p. m. then by definition this includes all calls up to Monday 7 a.m.(not only to midnight on Sunday), which will come re the evening calls!

Was that £8.54 a month including rental ? I want to be pre-armed with info before I make the phone call to BT.

My parents BT unlimited E+W comes up for renewal on 23rd March and BT have already charged for it for next quarter but not applied the associated discount to make it free.

I too was looking at Primus. Need a package that allows overrides to make cheaper calls abroad( currently use an 0844) and also need cheaper calls to mobiles.

edit : arrgh just read on another post that BT requires 30 days notice not to renew ? is that correct ? not sure if parents received letter about renewal
