I think the main lesson from this rather silly post from rorypie is to avoid this grotty shop at all costs.

I am however that the goods are "tested" by a part-time member of staff. How hard this person must have worked to achieve their "testing" qualifications.

    Oh, the folly of youth!

    Omg people seriously
If you don't like cex stay away from its as simple as that!
And leave the staff alone they get paid minimum wage (when they actually do get paid) and have to put up with miserable, rude people like the haters on this thread!

And surely they can play whatever music they like in store, as the staff are there working for hours, whilst customers shop in there for a matter of minutes

Get some perspective people, there really is more to life!!!!

With ID they accept other stuff too, some of it i don't believe to be the best form of ID but still it's ID. Like EU Identity cards, bank stuff and DWP stuff. If you have no ID you can't sell stuff for cash, and can't sell anything electronic.

I understand where you're coming from with the music...many times i've been annoyed about people playing death metal in the store, and our manager actually did something about it so now it isn't played. Our store plays a wide selection of music. The company on a whole employs a lot of 'rocker' type people...but like I've said, if a customer asked us to play something more mellow, we would (i know i would, as would most of our store's staff). I'm only speaking from my store's perspective though...as i say the staff choose the music, not the company.

FYI I know a lot about phones, electronics and computing. That's why I test...if you don't know your stuff you don't test. If a tester misses a fault...you still have your 12-Month warranty! I've worked very hard to gain my technical knowlege...which is the same of all our testers. We might be young, be we know our stuff.

I'd also like to add that, compared to other 2nd hand stores we're pretty damn good. Most of them don't offer a 12-Month warranty...nor do they give items a thourough test.

I'm not trying to say CeX are the best place in the world, i just think that this constant slating of the staff is really unfair. I work very hard, even though it's only minimum wage. I just want people to see the point of view of the staff. The staff are being unfairly criticized.

    Just a note to add:
Thanks a lot snowbrow! That's true...nice to have a decent, fair and understanding reply!

I've only been in one of these places once, and that was enough for me. I got the measure of it straight away.

It seemed to me that the people who worked there needed their customer care skills - I use the term advisadly - upgrading somewhat.

Where did you qualify in "FYI I know a lot about phones, electronics and computing"?

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper
.None of the staff seemed to have mentioned bancruptcy etc then.

I have never been in cex,but all these places are much of a muchness to me.
They buy stuff with virtually useless id from people (someone has now admitted this is the case, and I have often heard conversations outside these type of shops ,as someone passes their birth certificate back over to their friend, who has let them "borrow " it). They are most useful for drug users to be provided with a constant supply of money to feed their habit, from stolen goods that are often untraceable,as they have not been reported stolen.

We don't accept anything as crap as a birth certificate as ID...because, as I'm sure you're aware...that aint ID. It'd be nice to only accept passports and driver's licenses...but not everyone has one!

    mdeebee;

you don't need qualifications to prove knowledge...but I have a BTEC Diploma in IT, and got triple distinction...highest level you can get. Testers are all trained...and CeX provide us with loads of info and guidelines to make sure we do it right.

I'm very entusiastic about all things technology...and that enthusiasm has driven me to learn as much as i can. So, I don't have a degree in 'General Phone and Console KNowledge', but i'll soon have a degree in computer science (from the university who pretty much created the computer, might i add...not the kinda uni that just anyone gets into). I have a lot of experience though...especially in computers and consoles, and not just in playing with them, but troubleshooting and repairing. I know most of the problems devices have...inherrant faults with types of things. (like the jostick on older K-Series Sony Ericssons, the disc draw on pretty much all devices with a disc draw...I know what to look for.

If the staff at your local CeX give poor customer service...that's not good. I try my best to keep the customer happy...so not all CeX employees are like that.

I think these posts are getting too carried away. OK what is happening with their wages sounds horrid but it is kind of their business. The issue of cheques to customers is wrong and CEX should be reasuuring customers and sending the money asap. I really hope it gets sorted as i know Id hate not to get paid with all the bills these days (I don't work for Cex - work in an office)

For me shops like CEX are excellent as I can't afford to go and spend £40 on a new game. Most of my games are 2nd hand and then get traded in to buy more games,

I can honestly say the Bedford store is excellent. Clean,ok I might not like the music they play but their staff to tend to be quite young and well I 'm just not into the latest chart stuff these days. (getting older!)

These shops are basically similar to the old cash converters but at least better stocked , cleaner and nicer staff. The Bedford shop is quite a big open store - I think it used to be another miusic shop like MVC

I guess the easy way to end this is to say, ok either you will shop in CEX, or you won't. If you don't trust it don't shop there - there are a lot of places I won't shop in but as my choice CEX is not one of them.

    Yawn!

    I'm so impressed.

I give this company six months, at the most, so it's probably a good thing that you have knowledge of all things techonological.
