Can I just confirm, as an actual staff member, regarding the stolen phones rumours.

We can never be sure if an item is stolen, and if it is, we cannot falsly accuse customers without evidence, we will not buy in anything that flags up on an imei search as being stolen, infact we will keep it in our posession, delaying the customer while the police come to the store to apprehend them for questioning.
When we buy something in we take full I.D e.g passport/driving lisence, if the item is later reported stolen we then pass the details of whoever sold it onto the police.

If we just turned them away, they would sell it to someone else, and be untraceable, surely it is better this way?

Also a regular sales assistant has no right to turn items away, head office want everything bought in, if you go against your bosses , you can be fired...

I hope this clears up our reputation a little.
no I am not from head office, and I have noe been paid either, I just don't want a reputation as "dodgy" and someone who advocates the buying and selling of stolen goods!

Do not blame the store staff for cash shortages, returning issues, bounced cheques, it is out of our control.

Most of your customers will not have passports and driving licences.

Quite a lot of "first poster"'s here...

...if anything like my experiences last year, probably because if the company is in dire financial straits, noone is telling the staff anything, so they will be typing 'cex' into google to try and glean any information they can!

I had the misfortune to work for two retail chains last year that went into administration, and the amount of information that filters down as far as the shop staff is pretty low. The management don't want to lose any of the companies' assets, be that stock or staff, and if the company is in initial talks with insolvency practitioners they will have told the management to keep as quiet as possible soley due to the fact that it's almost impossible to sell on a business as a going concern if all the shop staff have walked due to fears about their jobs! It's pretty shabby unfortunately, but that's how these things tend to go.

I hope all gets resolved soon, for staff and customers who stand to lose out alike.

I have been past the Leeds shop a fair few times and each time it has a huge queue of customers. People looking to sel their items are willing to wait because they get a good price, but people looking to buy cant be bothered waiting. I think if they had two seperate queues then they would turn over more money because they are selling the stock quicker. Because they are selling electricals, which depreciate in value quickyl, they need to prioritise selling their goods and making sure they dont overpay on goods they purchase.

have been using local Cex store for a couple of years.
They always treat me well. I had my phone (N95) stolen recently, and as had only had it on contract for 2-3months, I couldn't afford to buy it brand new. I got one in store and it crashed after month. When I took it back the staff were friendly and helpful. As I had only had the new phone for just over a month, they offered me a reset of phone (apparently a common issue with the phone) or a replacement, a full refund in cash (I had bought as trade-in), or store credit.

You were lucky as it was within 1 month, cause even a second hand store still need to comply with Consumer Good Act for the first 30 days of purchase. That's why you got a exchange and refund to voucher. If you had more than 6 weeks, what they do is book in for warranty test and if no OBVIOUS fault is found, you will be crying as they won't do nothing but telling you to phone Customer Service.

True, and as I said, people comes in and sell their rubbish, aka OLD PHONE at about 9-12 pounds and some one is being ripped off at 20-25 pounds for a old, scratch to hell phone. They should have RECYCLE as their words rather just to sell on and make money.

    ha ha hilarious.

It is simple guys listen up
    No I.D no buy in.
    The end

Customers are such hypocrits it !!!!es me off, if they don't have I.D they will beg and beg and insist they are legit, saying a bus pass is fine as it has a photo, scream at you for not buying their crap, however they refuse to buy things because they don't think anything is traced... do you think we are just asking you for I.D, not every single person in the queue who wants to sell us something? Give me a break, you all want us to let you sell a phone to us and give you £500, while you buy a better phoen for only 50p and think you can throw it down the stairs then try return it and get a £200 replacement. I work for minimum wage, and follow the rules my boss gives, and I get things thrown at me, spat at, abuse hurled at, and treat like all the rules are my own, and my own fault. If we refused everything people didn't have a proof of purchase for we would have zero stock!
argh I am too !!!!ed off this this forum

Funny and BS, even a 12 year old kids come in store and he still be able to sign up as exchange mem, with one of the CEX card and still come out with a new game..lol

Exchange memebership only, we were talking about cash here. CEX cards are for full memebers only, if they have a card, it was a mistake another staff member made.
We let children trade old games they don't want anymore for new ones, heartless aren't we?

You better watch out what you are accusing customer by braking stuff and bring it back, fair enough if customer taking advantages, but you are talking about SECOND HAND stuffs, a second hand phones worth £200, as you said, if there is nothing call 12 Months warranty, no customer will come in and buy that phone and I am sure that you won't have this job either. A brand new phone always come with 12 months warranty anyway. You will be replace a brand new one if things go wrong. And if you could find me a phone for 50p, I will happy to buy 1000 of them and will give you some tips.
If I have decoded your attempt at English correct, let me try and reply to this garbled mess.

The figures I gave were metaphorical, representing the general attitude.
Look into the law, second hand goods do not have to offer ANY warrenty, it is under a sold as seen rule, you shoudl be grateful we offer any warrently, let alone 12months!
If you want a brand new phone with all the perks, buy a brand new pne for a brand new price, do not expect the perks of new, with the price tag of second hand.
Also just because it is second hand, does not mean we can't tell if the customer has broken it or not. WE test it before it is bought in and a quick once over before it goes out, we know what condition our stock is in, if it comes back , not saying yours did here, just som eothers I have seen, with the water damage sticker flooded, a chip outta the corner, a cracked screen , half hacked firmware, or anything like that, it is Physical damage or damage otherwise the customers fault, so no refund for them. The same applies brand new as well I think you will find.

haha, that is your own fault, that why you are still on minimum wages, as you don't work as a robot, work as yourself. that's why there is supervisor and manager there to sort thing out.
Have you ever had a job? You cannot disobey the superiors and "work as yourself", it is a company, there are rules and regulations, you follow them, yes like a robot at times, that is what it is to work in retail. Even the supervisors and managers are reporting to someone higher and doign as they are told.

So it is my own fault that i work for minimum wage by being a robot, so if I disobeyed orders did as i wanted I would be paid more, I think not, I think I woudl have zero job and be paid zero.

It is indeed my choice to work in this role, and I should not be attacked personally for it, I work for minimum wage to provide people like you with a service.
