I did something similar when i bought my first house - £50 a month went into a cardcash account at the halifax and that was all i had to spend for the month apart from bills and mortgage - covered food, petrol etc. As you an tell from the amount it was a good few years ago now!!!!!!! BUt it worked - that was all i could get at!
I too am so sorry for your loss - dads are special people - i still miss mine badly 22 years on. hold the memories dear - nobody can take those from you.

Menu planning is such a winner. It saves you wasting food and ensures you have variety like you say. There are a number of websites I've found useful (of course here for recipes) but also the bbc's site and also this is handy:
