    Afternoon all,

Been bed shopping this morning, and have finally found a base which has been approved by both of us (took some time to decide). Tis a faux leather base with sprung slats.

I've been offered a mattress with it, but stupidly forgot to take the brand down. All I know is that it's called a Venus Ortho. Has anyone any ideas about said mattress? I know it's a little vague....

I was leaning towards a Kozeesleep Pocketmaster (would prefer a slightly firmer mattress and like the support of pocket sprung) but I don't know if I can use it on the slatted base (the slats look to be around 2-3cm apart). Is it possible to use a board on a sprung slatted base to allow for a pocket sprung?

Forgot to mention: budget is around £250-300. If I'd be better getting a top end open coil for that I can reconsider...

The Venus is open coil, see here. So if you were looking for pocket sprung then you've been mislead or misinformed.

A pocket sprung mattress will be fine on 2/3cm gap slat, and even if it's more than that you can just use some peg-board to cover the gaps and still provide some ventilation for the mattress. You should be able to find a reasonable pocket sprung mattress on that budget though. Top of the range open coil are only viable on the under £200 budget.

    TTR, thank you for that.

The Venus wasn't being sold as a pocket sprung, in fact there wasn't any information available but it seemed comfy enough which hasn't discounted open coil for me now.

Fingers crossed that a pocket sprung will be fine on the 2-3cm gapped slats, in that case. All I need to do now is to find a local independent stockist to try some of these non 'big brand' mattresses out properly. (and hope that Kozeesleep reply to my email telling me where I can find local stockists).

  • Sorry about the links .. here's the blurb if it helps,

Restus Chicago 4ft 6 Double 12inch Mattress which combines two tempered steel spring units, working in harmony to provide a comfortable sleep system. Multiple layers of Hypo allergenic fillings and strengthened steel rod edges, completes the making of the mattress. With quality damask cover, unique quilting and flag stitched handles.

I assume this is an open coil one as I can't make head nor tail of the description.

Yes it's open coil but doesnt mention what guage the rod is, which may make a difference on quality and longevity. Sounds good with the damask cover etc, but will check later...

Will try find a suitable alternative too if I have time (I am supposed to be going out tonight so forgive me if I dont manage until late!)

The Jubilee is the newer of the Kozee brothers, so wouldn't recommend that one but the Restus looks good, although can't find what guage it is. Maybe Tim (who sells them) would know?
