It's a tough decision, especially when you spend about a third of your LIFE in bed! For your budget you may be better going for top spec open coil sprung, rather than budget pocket sprung or memory foam, which would be better support and comfort.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Hi to all you fellow mattress nerds!
I've been following the posts on this thread for over a month in order to glean some informed advice on a replacement for a 6 year old Silentnight mattress which has been uncomfortable for the past couple of years. It became so bad about 12 months ago that we had to lay an old duvet directly on top as a makeshift 'topper' which just about made it bearable.
Before finding this thread we made the mistake of buying a supposed 'Luxury' 75kg/m3 Memory Foam Mattress from Ebay which was very similar to sleeping on a very hot concrete slab. Luckily we managed to sell it on without losing too much.
As a result of the info on this thread we've recently purchased a pocket sprung Kozeesleep 'Regency' mattress which is soooooo comfy and just perfect for me and the wife. Thanks for all the advice especially Tim's and TiTheRev as without it I would have been completely lost and probably ended up paying through the nose for an inferior mattress from one of the big bed stores. I should also add that I did not buy through Tim's shop!!0 -
Thanks, do you mean shop around online? The thing is, as I'm no expert, it's rather difficult to know what's better or not so I could end up just getting soemthing even worse. Even having read a lot of this thread I still have no idea what constitues 'quality' especially in my price range .. open coil or pocket? how many springs are good/too few/too many? I now know of a few makes to avoid but that's about it.
This is a complete minefield.
Sorry, that's not a moan at you or the advice given on here as it's all helpful and appreciated, it's just I never realised how complicated just getting a bed could be
The whole reason for me being on this forum is because the bed industry is such a minefield. You wouldn't believe the number of sales gimmicks there are to try and get you to part with more money. These are just a few:- They will often tell you "the more pocket springs the better". The truth is that more than 800 pocket springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. If a mattress has too many springs then each spring has to be so small to fit into the mattress that they can get damaged easily. I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800.
- With memory foam mattresses they will tell you "the more memory foam the better". The truth is that the optimum depth is 2" to 2.5". The memory foam is only there to mould to your body. You get the bounce from the layer underneath. If the memory foam is less than 2" then it won't be enough to contour to your body. If it is deeper than 2.5" then all that will happen is you will sink deeper into the memory foam, and may become too hot.
- Non turn mattresses are another gimmick, and are actually often advertised as a feature. However, for years we have been told to turn mattresses on a regular basis in order to prolong the life of the springs. With a non turn mattress they have actually done nothing to the internal components of the mattress to make them last longer without turning them. What the manufacturer has done is they have only put quilting on one side of the mattress to cut production costs. So common sense tells us that the mattress won't last as long if it isn't turned.
As a general rule pocket springs are better than open coil springs, although a top of the range open coil sprung mattress could be better than an entry level pocket sprung one.
If a manufacturer for example makes 3 models of pocket sprung mattress all with the same number of springs, and with the same firmness rating, then go for at least the middle one. If a manufacturer makes only one model to the same criteria as above, then the chances are that it is a high quality one, as pocket sprung mattress are usually aimed at the top end of the market.0 -

Just coming back to say how we are still really pleased with the Millbrook Romance 1400 we bought from Mattressman (as recommended by Tim Deegan on this forum) . I didn't want memory foam and this mattress is just amazing. Can recoomend it to anyone. Mattressman were really good about changing my order after I came on here too.

£395 and worth every penny. Took three of us to get it up my stairs, but that's another story..."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

Right, I've been reading even more of this thread (it's very very long!) and I've been looking at the Kozeesleep matressess but I'm slightly confused. It said earlier in the thread that there are now 2 different companies with the same name and both seem to make the same name beds too? How is that possible? If one is better than the other, how can you be sure of which one you're getting?
Also, I've taken on board what's been said about getting a good open coil one rather than a cheapy pocket one but it does seem that nearly all of the mattresses at my price range are pocket ones so should I go slightly lower and get an open coil one?
Thanks0 -
There was a company called Kozeesleep who had internal issues and from the one company two were born, the slightly lesser quality one went on to become Kozee Sleep. Slight name difference, but apparently quite a quality difference.
Newer Kosee Sleep!
Original Koseesleep!
If you can afford pocket sprung mattresses, post the links and hopefully Tim will be able to tell you more about the exact quality of the mattress.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things.
