Could someone explain the difference between the different finishes on a mattress, ie hand tufted, micro quilted, damask cover, etc. And does it make a difference as you put sheets over the mattress?

Mattressman have changed my order, and they did it with a smile.

I explained it was not logical to deliver a mattress that I would definitely be returning under their no-quibble guarantee and they (finally) agreed. And they're delivering the replacement/upgrade (Millbrook 1400 Romace) tomorrow.

10/10 would recommend them to anyone.

Thanks for all your help and opinions.

  • I have just bought a new bed frame from Warren Evans - it has a slatted base.

Can anyone recommend a double mattress (medium/firm) that will work well (and hopefully last) with this bed frame?

Glad you got it sorted, the Millbrook will serve you better long term :)

    Define 'work well' ;)

Pocket sprung will provide comfort, memory foam even more so, but all is dependant on your budget and requirements. How wide apart are the slats?

Sorry - I realise that wasn't very clear!

I had heard that some mattress types are not suited to a slatted base.

In regards to budget I would like to spend about £350 for a double (135cm x 190cm) but could probably stretch to about £450 - £500 max if it meant much better quality or longer life.

Would prefer a medium - to medium / firm mattress.

    Cheers

For a double you should be able to get a decent mattress within your budget. Pocket sprung provides the better support BUT would not be advised if the slats are more than 3" apart. You can fill them in with more slats or put a board over them if you like though.

Memory foam will provide some more comfort, but comes at a price and can be warm if poor quality or too deep.

Have you been out and tried any that you like yet?

Argh, I have just received my matresss from Mattressland, but it's the wrong one!

I have been sent a Touch Classic 2000, rather than the (more expensive) Touch Pocket 2000 I ordered.

It weighs 56kg and took a month to be delivered, I will have to wait till tomorrow to find out how much hassle it's going to be to change it.

Did the guy walk with it? It'd take me that long too ;)

Hope you get it sorted, but 2000 is a bit too high a spring count dont you think  :rotfl:

I need to know a few details first:
    • What type of slats are they
    • how far apart are the slats
    • how firm do you like your mattress
    • what type of mattress are you interested in
    • what is your budget
