No worries Michelle, we cant know everything about everything, that's why there are forums like this to find out!
Do you have any special requirements? No back problems, 20st OH or anything? If not, then a good open coil sprung mattress should suffice, and for that budget should be easy.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. I've a dreaded Silentnight, and now (at last!) understand why it's sagging at the edges, in the middle and sounds twice as loud as my creaky floorboards! (almost four years old, I think I did quite well!)
Reading through all of this excellent thread, I think I want a pocket sprung replacement. My current Silentnight (a Miracoil creaker) is on a metal bedstead with wooden slats. I've doubled the number of slats on the base to fill it completely with few, if no, gaps in between (certainly nothing more than 0.5cm). My main worry is that the edges of the next mattress will suffer the same fate as the current one; we sit on the edges quite a lot and I wouldn't want them to collapse - they have no side support sat on the 'top' of the metal bedstead slats. Is that something I should worry about?
I think Pocket Sprung's the way forward as the two of us are fairly heavy (14 stone plus each) although we're a similar weight. We both prefer a supportive but not too firm mattress. Am I in the right direction? Would pocket sprung be right for us, or should I not discount the open coil? I'm put off of the memory foam due to the fact that I'm a very warm person and would worry about the heat factor.
Thanks in advance!0 -
Sounds like you've got it sussed. Pocket sprung sounds the way to go. What is your budget?
Pocket sprung will stop roll-together and if made well will support the edges for when you sit there. Memory foam is warm, so would cross that off the list.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. The budget isn't fixed as yet... I wanted to confirm what I should look for before starting my search and seeing what's in my price range. £400 max is a tentative figure, but if I can get a quality pocket sprung for less, I'll try to!
Thanks for the reassurance, Ti!0 -
£400 is a good starting figure, I would hope you'd be able to find something within that budget. As long as you turn it on a regular basis then it should be no problem. So to rest the springs as much as possible make sure you go for a two sided mattress.I think Pocket Sprung's the way forward as the two of us are fairly heavy (14 stone plus each) although we're a similar weight. Open coil springs tend to be tougher, but as I said above, as long as you look after a pocket sprung mattress properly then I can't see you having a problem with it.I'm put off of the memory foam due to the fact that I'm a very warm person and would worry about the heat factor.
Someone out there really has terrified people about memory foam being too hot. I think I must have repeated this at least 20 times in the forums:There are two main reasons why people say that memory foam makes you too hot:You should have no problem getting hold of a good quality pocket sprung mattress for £400. For pocket sprung/memory foam you may have to spend a little more.- Most memory foam mattresses are made up from a layer of memory foam on top of a layer of reflex foam. The reflex foam prevents heat escaping from the memory foam because it doesn't allow air to circulate as it would if there were springs instead. So you would be better off with a mattress that is made from springs and memory foam.
- The optimum depth for memory foam is 2" to 2.5" (I personally think 2" is better). If the memory foam is deeper than this it won't give any better support, but you will sink deeper into it. The memory foam will then engulf you, preventing heat escaping from your body naturally.

Hi,
Thought I'd join this thread for an opinion on this.
I ordered this mattress from Matressman about three weeks ago. It's a special order and is already a week late. It's a Sleepeeze Concept 2000
http://www.mattressman.co.uk/sleepeezee/mattresses/mattresses/king_size/P4863S0/concept_2000.aspx
Should I tell them I don't want it and order one of their 'in stock' mattresses instead?
We originally went to Dreams and laid on a few beds, but discovered that the one we liked the best was not available anywhere but Dreams and I thought it was a bit pricy. It was the Sleepeezee Luxor.
The mattress I've ordered was the nearest equivalent I could find and then I went up one price. We both hated the feel of memory foam.
Is the one I've ordered worth waiting for?
