I wonder if anybody could advise me on what type of mattress to consider. I am looking for a new double mattress, budget is up to £250. I had a car crash a year or so ago and now normally wake up with an aching/sore lower back. I've noticed that it feels better when I stay in a good hotel bed, so I think I need a new mattress.

I guess for my budget I only have a few options:

    1. Go for a lower-end pocket sprung.
    2. Go for a open coil with memory foam (though I am a bit concerned about over-heating)
    3. Got for a good open coil (and save a little bit of money to spend on physio :) )

Does anybody have any thoughts on what might be best for my back?

    Tim,
I think you totally over-reacted. Cashsavingtwig wasn't slating you in any way (which can't be said visa versa). He/She merely voiced their opinion and as far as I remember we still have free speech in this country and in this forum.
But your reaction has left me speechless and wondering!
I for one won't be coming back as I do not want to suffer the same fate as cashsavingtwig and otheres in this thread. So, you can save your breath writing another angry reply of how nobody knows anything, unless you like to proof my point!
And don't get angry if people are trying to think for themselves and voice their opinions, it doesn't look good.
    Enjoy your forum!

Their opinion was about me and was questioning my impartiallity and all the hard work I do to help people in these forums. So I have every right to be annoyed at a personal attck on myself by someone who doesn't even know me. Their point of view was wrong (I should know because it was about me), and I suspect it was either a trader who doesn't like me telling the truth, or it was someone who haas been on here before under a different name attacking me.

You asked a question yourself which I gave a 100% honest answer to, but you didn't launch into a personal attck on my integrity. Instead you chose to either accept what I said or not.

If someone asks about a product that isn't a very good specification with the view to buying it, then it's a pretty safe bet that they don't know much about mattresses (as with most people), which is why they asked the question in the first place. All I try and do is give people the truth rather than try to baffle people with gimmicks.

I'm not a doctor, so it may be worth asking their opinion. However it wouldn't do any harm to get a mattress with better support.

How firm do you like your mattress?

Wouldn't it be better to go for a firmness which promotes better spinal alignment rather than one that someone 'likes'? Obviously this would require going into shops and trying out mattresses, with someone else who can look at/feel your spine while you lie on them.

I may be completely misguided here but it makes sense to me. :)

    It's OK I am seeing a physio.

I sleep better in a medium to firm bed. I am over 6 foot but pretty skinny, so I would guess not super firm.

Years ago they used to tell us to go for a firm mattress for back support. However this applied to open coil springs and not pocket springs. In fact recent research has found that medium to firm open coil springs are better.

With pocket springs, memory foam, and a combination of the two, the mattress will contour to your body allowing your spine to follow it's natural curves. This is far better for your spine than just keeping your spine straight. So with these types of mattress you actually go for want you find most comfortable as they will provide equally good support across the firmness range.

Well you can get a good quality medium to firm pocket sprung mattress within your budget if you buy on line.

Don't go for a low quality one, as it could do more harm than good.

An osteopath once told me that if you can't afford pocket sprung with memory foam, or you like a soft mattress, then go for pocket sprung only.

    Hi Tim,

I'm new to this forum and am my hubby and I are in the process of buying furniture for our new house and wanted your advice on the following mattresses which we have seen today, but after reading reviews on this forum about the companies, we are not so sure now:

    - Dreams Tranquility mattress from £999

    - Dreams Cairo from £579

    - Sleepmasters Sensaform Sirius from £699

    - Sleepmasters California Backcare from £249.

As you can see, the prices vary greatly on the ones we like. I have read that you advise people to go to independent retailers rather than the larger chain stores but we have only just moved to the area and haven't spotted any smaller bed shops.

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Thanks

PS. It wouldn't let me post any links to the above mattresses as I am a new user - sorry.

    Hi

I am hunting for a mattress at the moment and a bit stumped on what to get, i normally spend ages researching products before I buy and prefer to get quality = cash. However don't want to get ripped off.

I need a super king, budget was around £1000-£1500 MAX. I am 19 stone and partner is 10 stone. So we need a firm and very firm. Also other half does not want to feel me move around too much as I wake her up. I don't want to get too hot so although I like the comfort of the dreams Keats / Chaucer with memory foam topper it does worry me once I got it home.

So far we checked out coil + foam from warren evans and also Keats / chaucer from Dreams which we liked.

I see online that its hard to find a mattress that costs more than £1k however in dreams or John Lewis you don't get much for less that £1200. What's the deal? Is the internet just better pricing or is the quality lower.

I went to dreams / john lewis / warren evans as only place I could find to try a new mattress. John lewis stuff felt very nice, but crazy prices at around £3k for what we liked.

I am pretty sure I need to go for Pocket Sprung, does 2000 springs over 1000 make a difference? Does having the memory topper mean its ok to have less springs. If you get with a major brand like Seale or Slientnight seems that they offer much cheaper mattress, its there anything like Dreams Keats thats from anther brand and not the price because dreams have all there shops etc

The frame is a Warren Evans slatted base (Kensington) if that makes a difference.

Can anyone offer me some advice?

    Thanks

    Hi.

You will get the best deals from independent retailers on line. Just make sure they have a satusfaction guarantee and a good returns policy. Make sure you can phone them to ask advice.
