  • Hi all.

I registered on here yesterday and have read most of the 170+ pages of this thread. There is a distinct pattern, which I will summarise to save you hours of reading.

Someone asks for a recommendation of what mattress to buy.
Usually, Tim Deegan, who sells mattresses for a living, will gladly reply. He is friendly and approachable, and generous with his opinions. Tim repeatedly reminds us that he cannot recommend a mattress himself because this is against the rules of the forum. However, he gets round this by criticising just about every other mattress (bar one) that's mentioned. Don't take my word for it if that sounds harsh, it's just an observation about what I've read.

He doesn't rate expensive mattresses made by big name companies. He doesn't rate cheap mattresses sold on Ebay. He recommends that we all purchase pocket-spring-with-memory-foam-on-both-sides-mattresses - now go onto google and see how much choice you get. (Let's just say there's a reason so many readers end up with La Romantica mattresses). I know you can buy them from someone else, but there's still only a handful of companies you can order these from, literally a handful, one of which is... you guessed it.

Now, I'm not saying that these mattresses aren't any good - they may very well be the best quality mattresses in the UK, but I need to read that somewhere else, somewhere impartial. So come on here for advice, and I'm sure you'll end up with a great mattress, but just keep it in your mind that the advice is NOT impartial - you are being steered towards a particular product, whether that's admitted to or not.

I have generalised a little, and I'm sure Tim will react strongly to my post, but I have had a frustrating 24 hrs trying to find a new mattress. I'm not trying to rubbish this thread, but it has definitely become the 'Tim Deegan guide to mattresses' rather than a general chatty post. I think if other bed retailers also joined in, the advice would be more balanced, but they don't seem to be on here. (I was looking for a simple 'Jo Bloggs recommends a such and such mattress because they've slept on it for a year and it's been comfy' site - I'll look elsewhere for that!)

Sorry if I'm now labelled a 'trouble-maker'; I'm not, and anyone who bothers to read through this post in depth may come to the same conclusion as me.

    Cheers folks.

Please get your facts right before slating me. I don't actually recommend any particular model or make, I only give general advice about specifications.

I am quite open about what I do, and have given a huge amount of advice on products that I don't sell. If you do your research you will see that I have given loads of advice on the Northern Ireland mattress thread which I couldn't possibly gain from because I don't sell there.

The reason I am in this forum is because there is so much hype and gimmicks in the bed industry, and I hate to see people ripped off.

As for Joe Bloggs recommending mattresses that they have used, they do quite often, but the trouble is that most consumers don't buy many mattresses in their lifetime, so don't get a huge amount of experience in mattresses.

There have actually been other retailers on here, but most of them don't like the forum because I expose the truth.

As for your views on my opinions, try twisting your views around the other way, and you might be closer to the truth. Or feel free to phone me and I will explain.

You asked a question about products (a product that a few new members have mentioned on here), and for some strange reason didn't like it when I told the truth:confused:. If you don't want to know the truth then why ask?

You make me laugh, and that's lovely! I can't handle the truth! :rotfl:

Seriously though, my point was that you're negative about almost every mattress that anyone on here asks about, apart from those ones I described before ie. the ones you sell.

Oh, and I haven't slated you love, I've just observed the general themes of the whole thread. It's not meant as an insult or to offend you, I've just condensed the whole lot to save my fellow shoppers reading nearly 180 pages of stuff!

Well you obviously haven't taken in what you have been reading because I point out both positive an negative points.

I have helped many people out on MSE, and most of them didn't buy from me. So rather that just coming on here to rubbish what I say, when you know that I can't say the things on here that I need to in order to defend myself. Just give me a call instead.

Isn't it funny how it is usually new members who come on here to cause trouble. And many long time members actually say that I should just ignore the trolls because they just come on here to cause trouble.

    Cause trouble?!

Maybe it's new members who read this thread in the hope of finding some impartial advice, and then see it for what it really is! But there's no need to be unpleasant. I know this has become 'your thread', but all I was doing was making an observation.

It's still an open forum, so we're all of us entitled to comment. Thanks.

No it's not my thread, and I don't want it to be. I welcome with open arms anyone else in the industry as long as they tell the truth. There are so many gimmicks, and so much hype in the bed industry (as there probably is in many other industries, but I know the bed industry). There have been others, but they seen to come and go.

I have dedicated 1000's of hours of my own very valuable time to helping people only for a very small minority of trolls like yourself to come along and start throwing accusations about, when you really don't know anything about me.

This is from the 'notice to newcomers thread':

"Over the last few weeks we have had a number of "troll" attacks on the boards.

What is a Troll? A troll is a person that posts deliberately provocative, nasty or hurtful comments on threads. They may be a person with no previous connection to the board or someone that has created a pseudonym to get their point made.

If you should get a comment made on any thread you post asking for help and advice please realise this comment is not directed at you personally.
We really are all a lovely bunch here (oops, modest, sorry) so please ignore these nasty comments and continue to post here as normal.

what should i do if i get a comment made on my thread?

firstly do not respond to the comment as this invariably is what the person wants. At the bottom of the post, on the left hand side is a red "warning" triangle. Click this and then "send" the message that comes up. This will report the message to abuse who will review it's content and delete it.

The person we had this morning was particularly vile and nasty and please believe me is an extreme rarity here.
Above all PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE BOARDS. THIS SITE IS AN ASSET TO SO MANY, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT FEELS THE WORLD IS FALLING IN ON YOU. THERE IS SUCH A WEALTH OF ADVICE HERE TO BE HAD THAT THE COMMENTS OF ONE MUST NOT DETER YOU FROM AVAILING YOURSELF OF THE KNOWLEDGE HERE!!!!

It is testament to the work that martin has done and continues to do that so many people give their time knowledge and experience freely to others, without judgement, to lift people out of the depths of debt crisis

PLEASE DO NOT LET THE ACTIONS OF THE MINORITY RUIN THAT."

It really is starting to look like you are upset because the links were yours, and you didn't like the fact that I revealed the fact that they weren't the bargains they appeared to be to the untrained eye.

Now if you don't like the thread, then you can go to another one, but I am here because many people ask me directly for advice, and I give it (impartially).

From now on I will just ignore your insulting comments.
  • Ouch. So, if anyone posts an opinion on here that's different from yours, you bully them until they go?

I know you're not reading what I write properly, but I'll tell you one last time; I was merely making an observation about the apparent impartiality of this particular thread. I'm not being a 'troll', and I am not meaning to insult you. Your tone has become quite unpleasant. Good luck with your mattresses Tim.

This is my last reply to you:

I welcome all opinions, but your aren't constructive, they are just personal attacks aimed at me.

You know nothing about me so don't judge me.

If you know so much about the bed industry that you can say that I'm not telling the truth and being impartial, then maybe you should be open about who you really are.

If you aren't connected with the bed industry then you have no right to say that what i'm saying isn't true, and the only possible reason for you to be here would be to cause trouble.

    Goodbye

As the very happy owner of a La Romantica Madrid mattress I can only reiterate that we've had no problems with getting too hot/sweaty. Our bedroom is a loft room which always gets hot in summer and I must admit that, initially, the thought of foam on a mattress was a concern but we haven't had any such problems even during the recent very hot weather. We just use a normal quilted mattress protector under the fitted sheet and that works fine for us - we've never slept better.. :)

Well I have to be honest and say when I had a La Romantica Venice I did have a problem with it getting too hot/sweaty and had to send it back. I did however exchange it for a Madrid with Climasmart fabric (or whatever it's called) and I'm very happy with it. It's still perhaps a little warmer than my old mattress but a definite improvement on the Venice (with no Climasmart) and I'm not waking up feeling I have to jump straight in the shower anymore!

    Tim,
I think you totally over-reacted. Cashsavingtwig wasn't slating you in any way (which can't be said visa versa). He/She merely voiced their opinion and as far as I remember we still have free speech in this country and in this forum.
But your reaction has left me speechless and wondering!
I for one won't be coming back as I do not want to suffer the same fate as cashsavingtwig and otheres in this thread. So, you can save your breath writing another angry reply of how nobody knows anything, unless you like to proof my point!
And don't get angry if people are trying to think for themselves and voice their opinions, it doesn't look good.
    Enjoy your forum!
