    Hi Tim,

I have been looking around for a mattress now for a while however was wondering if you could offer some advice.

I currently have a memory foam mattress from these guys Ergoflex (Google it) of which I have only had for about a year. Im 6.2 and weigh 14 stone and suffer from asthma so hypoallergenic is a must.

I find the whole memory foam thing an odd experiance and feel I might be better suited to a traditional pocket sprung mattress. Whilst trying various mattresses I find firm does feel better and provides the support I need although most manufactures appear to focus on medium support.

I found this mattress at bedlum RESTUS, Coniston Pocket Sprung King Size Divan Beds. From 504.00 which I think might suit me however only comes in a medium and not firm.

Any ideas, budget is around £500-£600

sorry cannot post links due to being a new user

    Thanks

Update: Just went and tried out the Vi-Spring range today of which im really impressed with. The one I want is the Harold Supreme (King) which is around £2k at Furniture village although can get it for £1500 online, however after searching around I found that John Lewis are selling a Vi-Spring model for £1025 called the Tavistock which I would imagine should offer good value for money.

Do your springs make much noise, Gus? I am in a definite minority as while most folks want a nice firm bed, I really want something soft - I`ve previously slept on a water bed and trying to get the closest to that level of comfort in a standard bed.

no noise at all - but they are firm rather than soft - not sure if that makes a difference (Tim would probably be able to tell you). anyway, if I had to buy again - I'd be very happy with pocket springs. Have you actually been to a bed retailer and tried them out? probably the best bet?

    best, Gus

In that case you shouldn't pay more than £250 for a top of the range open coil sprung (unless you want drawers).

Thanks Tim, is that including the base? And would you say it would be better to go for top of the range open coil or bottom of the range pocket sprung? Best, Gus

There are very few two sided memory foam mattresses on the market.

Can someone name them or supliers, note i'm NOT asking for recommendations just somewhere to start my research since there are so few available i need to know which they are otherwise i'm looking for a needle in a haystack.

You will struggle to find a 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattress for that. You might be better off going for a good quality pocket sprung only mattress.........what size are you after?

I'm looking for a small medium which is why i hoped it's achievable, if i was after a king i realized its well above that. Maybe its still unrealistic? I'm happy with the next best option so just good quality springs is fine too.

That shouldn't be a problem as long as the mattress is supported and doesn't bend when upright.

I just have to trust the suppliers know what they are doing, they have a good reputation and are used by spacemaker (custom made bedrooms at an obscene mark up but i'm not using them) so there product is being brought in bulk. I will have to make sure when the bed is placed in the wardrobe it placed far back enough not to leave a gap that causes the bed to sag.

Any suggestions for an alternative manufacturer?

I'm not allowed to do that I'm afraid.

It sounds like you have been put off memory foam by a mattress that isn't a very good design. This is a shame as good memory foam mattresses can give an excellent sleeping experience.

You should find that if you trawl through the various options on any bed retailers web site, that they will usually range from soft to medium to firm.

You should never pay anywhere near £1000 for a pocket sprung only mattress, no matter how many gimmicks it has.

Yes it does include the base. A divan set is the base and mattress together.

You would be better off with top of the range open coil sprung, as a poor quality pocket sprung won't give very good support, comfort, or very long life of the mattress.

I visited Dreams today to try their Millbrook Countess mattress, it was quite nice and so was a Dunlopillo Bronte - but then I lay on a Staples Edinburgh and it was sheer heaven. 1400 8" pocket springs tufted with silk, wool and cotton £799 for double size. The salesman tried to tell me it was two sided so I lifted it up and proved him wrong  Thank goodness for Tim`s advice, it would be so very easy to get conned.

Knowing the Dreams price tag would be inflated, I have searched online and come up with a possible cheaper version at clickonmattresses.co.uk. Staples Heritage Duchess £549 for double size.
    • 1600 8" Pocket springs
    • Upholstered with luxurious Deep layer of lambswool, soft white cotton felt and a wool blend with silk Turnable so presumably the luxury upholstery is on both sides ( or would they be sly enough to give one nice side and one plain basic side?)
This was a medium tension but was really comfy and felt soft to me when I lay it. Not much info about them but they seem to be a well repected brand. No nightmare stories anyway unlike many of the other big brands.

Just wondering if anyone has one of these. Tim, would you say because these two mattresses have similar spec, both medium rated, both 8" pocket springs with a few more on the cheaper Duchess, same luxury upholstery ( plus the duchess is better for having two side of course) and therefore should give the same feel to lie on? I loved the thick, soft layer of upholstery, though I assume it would settle somewhat over time, if looked after and turned regularly could I hope to keep this in good shape for many years? It is only me in the bed and I move about from side to side and in the middle so I would be giving pretty even use to the surface area.

ETA - the website selling the Duchess appears to show a photo of a completely different mattress! Staples Backcare silver, very naughty, how on earth are you supposed to know what you are buying?
