Which mattress? (merged threads)

Tim, thanks for your reply and advice. The Hypnos mattress has been used pretty much every day - it is on a brass bed base with an upholstered support directly underneath the bed - it feels like it has springs in it - the mattress and bed were bought at the same time in about 1999. How many years left do you think?
Also, in terms of budget for a rental property bed - what would you say I should be spending for base and mattress?
Thanks, Gus
If the Hypnos has been turned on a regular basis then it could have another 5 years or so left in it, but it would be impossible to tell without seeing it.
What size divan set are you after for the rental property?0 -
Would appreciate a bit of help on a mattress choice.
I've seen a few comments on pocket sprung (Tim you commented in one thread I believe) that when there's loads of springs they tend to be smaller and not as effective?
I've been eyeing up the Nubed 3000 with a Memory Foam top layer as seen here:

Nubed (Harrison I believe?) don't seem to be sold in many places but are still fairly pricey. I think after a bit of research I want a pocket sprung with memory foam topper0 -
Hi all,
My only experience of springs has been cheap and nasty beds that twang every time I turn over. I had originally though that latex would give me the most comfort but am now considering the possibilty of pocket springs with either latex or traditional finish.......which means trawling through this thread again as now reading from a different angle. Losing the will to live and going cross eyed but determined to find a comfy mattress. So far the makes standing out are
La Romantica
Kozeesleep
Millbrook (particularly impressed that a few people have had these long term and been very happy)
Please can I ask a question about pocket sprung mattresses? Would there be much spring noise from a decent quality mattress? Many of you have bought a pocket sprung mattress so hopefully lots of you will have opinions on spring noise.0 -
to Tim: I was looking for either a small double or a standard double divan for the rental property
to Slinky: as I just posted - I have owned my Hypnos pocket sprung for 10 years and it still feels firm and comfortable (it's even survived a minor flood). I seem to remember spending quite a lot back then (around £500 - but it was a long time ago!).
Thanks, Gus0 -
Do your springs make much noise, Gus? I am in a definite minority as while most folks want a nice firm bed, I really want something soft - I`ve previously slept on a water bed and trying to get the closest to that level of comfort in a standard bed.0

I didn't say that large numbers of springs aren't as effective, I said that they are far more fragile, and that huge numbers of springs are just a gimmick to charge more and give no extra benefit.
The nubed3000 just has 3 layers of very small springs. It is just a gimmicky non turn mattress. They don't even state the depth or the density of the memory foam, which isn't a good sign.0 -

Noisey springs are usually associated with poor quality open coil sprung mattresses that are worn out. Or especially the continuious spring type like miracoil, posturetech etc...which is why most manufacturers have stopped making mattresses with continuous springs.
Pocket springs all work independently, and each spring is encased in it's own individual fabric pockets which prvent springs from interlocking, or rubbing against each other. For this reason you shouldn't get spring noise from quality pocket sprung mattresses.0 -

Forgive me if this question has been asked repeadedly but 175 pages is a lot to go through.
From what I have read in this thread the best mattress is steel pocket spring with aprox 50 to 60mm of memory foam. It doesnt have to be turnable. (please correct me if I am wrong)
There are a lot of compamies out there that sell mattresses which conform with this list but how do you know which ones are quality. Are there any manufacturers/products that are considered good quality?
Tim, I know you cant do recommendations due to your profession but some pointers from anyone will be a good start. I know what I want, memory foam mattress (I have a major spinal injury from a road traffic accident) on a king divan (I have a small bedroom), but I dont know of any reputable places. It would be great if I could get a few product names that meet Tim's recommendations and are good quality.
thanks guys,0 -

Any suggestions for an alternative manufacturer?0
