Which mattress? (merged threads)

Hi
Just wondering if anyone can suggest some good companies to look at with regard to buying a new mattress.
I've looked at argos & dreams but i'm sure there are better places to buy from - they seem a little expensive, but i may be wrong!
I'd appreciate suggestions for either online or stores.
We're looking for a kingsize, pocketsprung mattress. I was thinking of the airsprung make as i believe they are not part of the Silentnight group (will never buy Silentnight again!).
If you have any suggestions for a good make of mattress i'd be very grateful
Thanks

If you either add extra slats to close the gaps up to 1" then you can get a good quality pocket sprung mattress for your budget. If you can't add extra slats then you can lay a sheet of pegboard (or hardboard) over the slats to spread the weight out.0 -

I went to the sale of one of the big bed companies and found the memory 250 mattress for £200 pounds and the next one up which was the 700 outlast for £379. (they were half price.)
I've come here to do some research and it seems a spring base is better then all foam? I was told the material (of the cover) it was kept in regulated the temperature to stop it getting hot. I wasn't sure why they went to the trouble of saying that but now i understand full foam mattresses have an over heating problem. I doubt there temperature regulating surround works either.
I noticed they didn't have handles too so it was non-turn? I'm pretty disgusted i'm glad the guys hard sell put me off and i decided to leave to look online.
So i just like to know what springs, what depth of memory foam (i know there's a bit disagreement on this so i'll go with 55-85 when looking but will probably go in the middle).
Also can SOMEONE ELSE mention the 'independent companies' that are being talked about since tims hands are obviously tied. Its hard to know which are reliable and which are frauds without investing a disproportionate amount of time on research that will probably drive me in circles till i go nuts.:rotfl:
I realized ideal specs have been discussed but this topic has got really big don't the moderators start new threads and retire old ones so your not drawling through pages of old info. ?
My budget is around £350 if its not possible with foam then i'll drop it to £200 and get one with springs only.
btw my base is a hideaway wall bed brought from hideawaybeds if that will affect anything. (so the mattress will be kept up against the wall for most of the day and i wouldn't want gravity destroying it).
So glad i didn't bite that guy nearly had me today with the hard sell but when he said 'i have the cheaper bed at home i brought it 5 years ago and its stopped my back problems' i could see his nose twitch and grow an inch or so. How often does that actually work? How gullible would you have to be?
Also guys i have chronic fatigue syndrome- lots of fatigue and muscle pain so something thats not to soft but also not to hard pls. I have trouble getting out of bed as it is. P:
Thx to all in advance.0 -

Hi
I have had people on here recommend me both Bedkingdom.co.uk and Bedlum Beds -both have been helpful. I know others should be able to recommend other companies as well.
Cheers

I think they mean half the made up full price. Also £129 is a huge amount extra to pay for Outlast on one side of the mattress.I've come here to do some research and it seems a spring base is better then all foam? I was told the material (of the cover) it was kept in regulated the temperature to stop it getting hot. I wasn't sure why they went to the trouble of saying that but now i understand full foam mattresses have an over heating problem. I doubt there temperature regulating surround works either.
Climasmart and Outlast do actually work. Climasmart is known as Thermocool in most countries, and is used by many of the Formula 1 teams in their mechanics and drivers overalls, it is used by Pringle in some of their top of the range golf clothing, and is used in many top of the range ski clothing.I noticed they didn't have handles too so it was non-turn? I'm pretty disgusted i'm glad the guys hard sell put me off and i decided to leave to look online.
There are very few two sided memory foam mattresses on the market. So i just like to know what springs, what depth of memory foam (i know there's a bit disagreement on this so i'll go with 55-85 when looking but will probably go in the middle).
If you go for pocket springs, then you need to go for full size steel pocket springs (not reflex foam encapsulated).
55kg is really a little bit too low, but is acceptable if you must have memory foam, and you like a softer mattress. 85kg will give excellent support, but due to it's slow recovery it will make it very difficult to change position. For the above reasons the optimum density is 60 to 70kg.
As for the depth of the memory foam: Memory foam is only there to mould to your body and give even support without causing pressure points, and 2" is enough to mould to your body. If the memory foam is too deep thenyou will just sink deeper into it which can make you very hot, and make it difficult to change position. My budget is around £350 if its not possible with foam then i'll drop it to £200 and get one with springs only.
You will struggle to find a 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattress for that. You might be better off going for a good quality pocket sprung only mattress.........what size are you after?btw my base is a hideaway wall bed brought from hideawaybeds if that will affect anything. (so the mattress will be kept up against the wall for most of the day and i wouldn't want gravity destroying it).
That shouldn't be a problem as long as the mattress is supported and doesn't bend when upright. So glad i didn't bite that guy nearly had me today with the hard sell but when he said 'i have the cheaper bed at home i brought it 5 years ago and its stopped my back problems' i could see his nose twitch and grow an inch or so. How often does that actually work? How gullible would you have to be?
Unfortunately that's what you get in many of the big chain stores.0 -
I've been working my way through these threads but it's taking some time! Thought I'd cut to the chase and ask Tim for some suggestions...if you don't mind.
I recently acquired a wooden super king size sleigh bed. It has lats which have a 3" gap in between them. It also has 2 support struts which run down the bed - so the support should be OK.
Can you recommend the type of mattress I should be looking for? I understand pocket sprung with memory foam on top is best, but not on this type of bed, unless used with that board with the holes in.
Probably looking in the region of £300-400.
Cheers for any advice.0 -
Hello Tim, I am a new user to this forum. Have been looking through the first 40 pages of the thread, and I must say that the advices from you are extremely helpful. I have just ordered a Hyder Bali Ottoman Leather Double Bed from Morale Home Furnishing website on Friday, before coming across this forums, which is why I have made the fundamental error of buying the bedstead first before the mattress. As my flat is a tiny one, I will need to get an Ottoman bed for the extra storage. The mattress that I would prefer will be :
- Pocket Spring and part memory foam
- Turnable
- Hypo-allergenic
- Firm with Support but also comfortable cushion on top
I understand that you have the La Romantica Madrid bed, can I ask if this will be suitable for the bedstead that I bought. and if not please can you give any advise on what type of mattress i should go for, and the price I should be paying for it?
Many thanks (",)0 -
Hi Tim,
Please can I seek your advice about a mattress I have bought. I am sincerely hoping that you can reassure me that I am just being silly, as I have an awful gut feeling that I have been `had`.
Please bear with me , I will try to give a brief background. Having studied this thread I had decided that the right mattress for me would be 100% latex - as a very light sleeper who tosses and turns a lot I did not want any springs making noises nor did I want memory foam because my bedroom is cold and I also am approaching the age where I am likely to be getting rather hot in bed lol. I sleep on my side and tend to wake up stiff and aching every morning so I wanted a softer matress. Originally I had looked at the Dunlopillo Celeste or Abaca Organic latex mattress but was put off by the negative comments here (about Dunlopillo) and frankly the £1000 price tag was a bit too steep for me. I was delighted to find online a 100% latex mattress offered in medium/soft tension for only £435 - I won`t name the brand at this stage as if my fears are unfounded then it would be unfair to them but while not one of the big companies their products are offered on several websites so not completely obscure either.
The mattress arrived rolled up and boxed as many do these days - on taking the mattress out of the box I noticed that the label marked with the mattress size was also marked F-FR which I was worried may mean firm rated, plus the outer plastic wrapping was filthy. I emailed the company to ask if they had perhaps sent me a firm mattress by mistake and mentioned the dirt. They replied that they had definitely sent a med/soft mattress and that F-FR related to it being fire retardaent, plus the mattress inside the wrapping would be clean. I opened the plastic and let the mattress unfold and air ( had one grubby corner which was annoying but reckoned I could live with it) Now I haven`t yet slept on this mattress but to me it feels very firm, but I cannot prove if they have sent me the wrong mattress, out of curiosity I unzipped the cover to see the foam and look at the supposed 7 comfort zones exepecting to see a slab of milky white foam as shown on many website photos. The foam is covered in fabric - the papery sort that usually covers a very cheap duvet, and from what little I can see through this the foam looks grey and just has holes in it. I am also rather concerned that having paid for it over the phone I have not had any paperwork for my order whatsoever. Sorry that wasn`t a very brief background, was it?
Anyway, to get to the point.....Tim please can you confirm that a mattress is marked with F-FR relating to being fire retardent, rather than firmness and it is normal for a 100% latex mattress to be a grey colour and covered in this cheapy fabric? After spending £435 which is a lot of money to me I am sincerely hoping you will reassaure me and tell me I am a silly mare for doubting them as the alternative is that I have paid all that money for a piece of rubbish. I would rather look a fool by posting here than to have been ripped off. Either way I suspect I am stuck with it anyway due to their terms and conditions, so my last question is whether I could make this mattress more comfy with a very soft topper. Not memory foam as I use a woolly cover, not feather I had one before and got fed up of being stabbed by quills so all I am left with is the possibility of a very soft latex topper. I see Dunloplillo do one but it is £300  so if anyone can suggest where I could find a very very soft latex topper please let me know.
Thanks for your patience of you managed to wade through all this Tim, hoping you can help.
ETA, Tim I know it seems cheeky to ask your advice when I could/should have bought from you, but you don`t sell the sort of mattress I wanted.0 -

You won't find a good quality pocket sprung/memory foam 6' mattress for £400. For that price you would be looking at either a low ebd pocket sprung only mattress, or you could get an open coil sprung/memory foam mattress (which you wouldn't need to use hardboard or pegboard with).0
