There are very few two sided memory foam mattresses on the market.

Can someone name them or supliers, note i'm NOT asking for recommendations just somewhere to start my research since there are so few available i need to know which they are otherwise i'm looking for a needle in a haystack.

You will struggle to find a 2 sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattress for that. You might be better off going for a good quality pocket sprung only mattress.........what size are you after?

I'm looking for a small medium which is why i hoped it's achievable, if i was after a king i realized its well above that. Maybe its still unrealistic? I'm happy with the next best option so just good quility springs is fine too.

That shouldn't be a problem as long as the mattress is supported and doesn't bend when upright.

I just have to trust the suppliers know what they are doing, they have a good reputation and are used by spacemaker (custom made bedrooms at an obscene mark up but i'm not using them) so there product is being brought in bulk. I will have to make sure when the bed is placed in the wardrobe it placed far back enough not to leave a gap that causes the bed to sag.

Also to the lady who said she recieved a bed that was dirty and suspects the wrong firmness, you don't need to worry about the companies returns policy your statutory rights will cover you under the consumer act. Length of time is ambigious but you should be good to use that within 6 months of purchase give or take.

In this case you should allow consumer rights to investigate a case of mis-selling to establish if they have given you the wrong firmness and lied, also if its dirty out of the box its not as described (in this case 'new') although you should really take pictures of any damage or dirt straightaway with any product as it will help your case.

Either way let consumer rights look into it, if your right they will take action and if your wrong they won't, so you've got nothing to lose. :T
  • Thanks eskimo26, I will try to take a photo, plus photos of the dirty wrapping, though being white fabric it may not show up due to the flash and being such a silly trusting soul I had brushed the worse of the dirt off already. To anyone else the mark wouldn`t be hugely noticable now but I know it is there.

I have waited so long to have a new bed and mattress, spent ages researching ( mostly on this thread lol) and feel totally gutted and stressed at all this hassle. If I am lucky enough to get my money back then I think I`ll have to splash out on the credit card for something decent though there is little choice out there in decent quality soft mattresses it seems. Might have to be the Abaca Organic given that Dunlopillo`s standards have slipped....if/when I get my money back I`ll have to post for further advice.

Many thanks to both of you, Tim and eskimo26.

    Hi Tim,

I am moving house and my wife wants to buy a new bed for us and one for a room which we will be renting out. We currently have a brass bed frame which she says won't fit 'the look'. Anyway, to save money, I'd like to buy just the base for us rather than the base and the mattress - I bought a Hypnos pocket sprung mattress about 10 years ago but it still seems firm and is comfortable and would like to use this on the following bed:

    http://www.johnlewis.com/230617494/Product.aspx

I've read a fair few pages of this thread and it seems that it might be worth putting a piece of ply over the slats?

Also, do you know if there is any way I can find out who makes this bed to see if I can find it cheaper or in different styles? My wife wants lots of storage but not the lift up type and isn't convinced by divans or the underbed drawers (too much dust...)

Finally, I've read that you advise people to buy a non branded mattress to get better value - or do you mean go for the smaller brands? how can avoid a terrible brand? would you say the same about the base - or does this matter less?

    Thanks very much in advance.

    Best, Gus

Has your wife actually seen that bed, as it is a divan?

I advise to go for smaller independent manufacturers and retailers, not unbranded.

Woody - I think that's Tim's online business - and he's not allowed to comment I suspect...(I did a little research, however I could be wrong!)

Tim, thanks for your earlier reply - I have found a possible mattress for my superking bed that I'd like your opinion on to find possible flaws in, if you don't mind.
Your help is appreciated and I've learned there's more to mattresses than meets the eye!

It's ebay item number 260426262119 (I'm barred from posting links being a newbie poster)

The firmness rating is 4/5 med to firm and the manufacturer is HOMEWORKS. I've yet to find out if it's delivered vacuumed or flat.

    Cheers.

Thanks for your quick response Tim. Yes, we saw the bed - not quite sure what the definition of a 'divan' is (I was under the impression that it is an upholstered base) - it is made in wood - well actually veneered board (which doesn't fill me with a huge amount of confidence to its longevity) - but to be more precise - she doesn't like upholstered divans.

    1. How much life do you think a Hypnos mattress has in it? Is 10 years past its useful life - it still feels like a good firm mattress - but am I living on borrowed time?
    2. Do you know if there are any other manufacturers of wooden divans?
    3. What mattress type would you recommend for a rental property?

I know that you can't recommend any particular small manufacturers/retailers - but can anyone else???

    Thanks again,

    Gus

They don't have much detail about the spec of the mattress, and much of the information they give about memory foam isn't correct. So it looks like they really don't have a clue about mattresses at all. In fact from the items they sell it looks like either cheap low quality imports, bankrupt stock, or seconds.

One thing that would concern me is this: "THE POCKET SPRUNG MATTRESS USES POCKETS INSTEAD OF SPRINGS." which tends to imply that it may contain barrel shaped foam instead of steel springs. Or it could be that they don't know what they are talking about.

Ask them what type of pocket springs, and what size they are. Also if they are reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs.

What type of base has the mattress been on up to now, and how often was it used?

I'm afraid I don't know of any wooden divan manufacturers, but at over £600 the John Lewis one is very expensive considering it isn't solid wood.

For a rental property I'd go for mid to high range open coil sprung.

Tim, thanks for your reply and advice. The Hypnos mattress has been used pretty much every day - it is on a brass bed base with an upholstered support directly underneath the bed - it feels like it has springs in it - the mattress and bed were bought at the same time in about 1999. How many years left do you think?

Also, in terms of budget for a rental property bed - what would you say I should be spending for base and mattress?

    Thanks, Gus
