Vested interest or no vested interest if we did not have some sort of interest we would not be here we could be involved in buying, selling, manufacturing or researching we still have an interest which makes us post and be involved
People with no interest Vested or not vested would not be here!!!
If a materess salesman gives good avice that is not to do with his products direcly what is the problem?
If he is deliberately giving advice to sell his products and targeting people in private messages and using other unethical marketing techniques then it becomes a problem!

As impartial advice is not the name of the game here I'm afraid I shall consult elsewhere.
It's a great pity...0 -
Thanks Ashley
I don't really care who I get the advice from as long as it's impartial and I think we should all bare that in mind that there are always going to be people involved in the mattress industry here, anyone who pushes a particular company will always raise suspicion. All I need is advice on what type/specification of mattress I should be looking for.
In my case I am a restless sleeper and move quite a bit, I also do manual work and consequently my back is quite often sore. Therefore I want a GOOD mattress that will support my spine, aid a good nights sleep and allow me to breakdance without waking up my partner. I found this in the Tempura mattress on a visit to the states, but i don't want to pay 1600 quid. What specifications should I be looking for?
Many thanks for all advice past and future!!

"What you need is a new bed which offers the right support for your spine (not necessarily hard at all!) Remember that the term orthopaedic and other derivations of the word only mean that the bed is a firmer specification from that manufacturer. There are no universal standards of firmness in common usage in the UK. BUT if you have a back or skeletal problem you should consult your GP or Specialist before buying."

The follwing has been taken from a bed company called myessentia based in the USA but the information is quite informative
""Your back pain is likely the result of 8 hours of improper spinal alignment.
Improper support, improper spinal alignment, poor blood circulation and poor pressure point relief contributes to persistent upper and lower back pain as well shoulder and neck pain. Sleeping on a poor quality mattress has been proven to lead to back pain, as well as contribute to it.
s a Firm Mattress better for your back? People often confuse firmness with support; however, recent studies show that maximum support and back pain relief are provided by a medium-firm mattress. 95% of orthopedic surgeons in one survey said they believed a mattress plays a roll in lower back pain management. 31 million Americans have suffered from acute or chronic back pain.
Firm Mattress Studies
According to a study published in the British medical journal, The Lancet, researchers found that patients suffering from back pain were twice as likely to report improvement when sleeping on a medium-firm mattress as opposed to those patients who slept on a firm mattress.
The trial involved 313 adults with chronic lower back pain and backache. As a part of the study, the subjects were randomly assigned to two groups. The first group slept on a medium-firm mattress instead of their normal mattress and the second group on a firm mattress.
When compared to the patients who slept on a firm mattress, patients who slept on the medium-firm mattresses reported reduced incidents of back pain in bed, reduced back pain upon rising from the bed, and reduced back pain related to disability. The study results indicated that a medium-firm mattress provides a better balance between back support and comfort for lower back pain than a firm mattress.
Contrary to popular belief, sleeping on a mattress that is too firm exerts additional pressure on the back, resulting in more back pain for some patients. So the best mattress for a bad back is a medium-firm.
Mattress Materials for a Better Sleep
The materials and support system used in mattress manufacturing are crucial to maintaining proper sleep quality as well as back support. Coil mattresses are not able to offer the same support, comfort and durability that memory foam or latex mattresses can provide.
Memory foam mattresses offer superior support due to the contouring support and pressure point relief provided.
Soft, Medium or Firm Mattress?
We need to re-evaluate our purchasing habits. The decision of a soft, medium or firm mattress doesn't apply. It depends entirely on your body type and the level of support you seek. Top heavy or bottom heavy, 5 feet tall or 6’5, many factors need to be taken into consideration.""

Well I'm not a chartered accountant with 18 years experience but I'd like to remind anyone considering purchasing anything via this thread (or anywhere else) that using a credit card offers additional protection providing the item costs more than £100.
Quote from MSE's own credit card guide:
"Legal Rights. If you buy something that costs more than £100 and less than £30,000, and partially or fully pay for it on a credit card, you gain a valuable legal protection known as ‘section 75'. This means the credit card company is equally liable with the retailer if you have a problem with your statutory consumer rights. "
This means that you can pay, for example, a deposit by card and the rest by cash, cheque or whatever and still gain the extra consumer protection. This is well worth remembering in these uncertain times...0 -

The Lancet report came out a year or two ago, and after reading through it a couple of times, it seems that they were only talking about open coil sprung mattresses, which goes along with what many of us already knew.
As far as I know, and from what I have been told by an Osteopath, if you go for pocket sprung, or memory foam (or latex), or a combination of both, then you should still go for a firmness that you find comfortable. As even a soft pocket sprung mattress will still contour to your body.0 -
Hi Tim,
Are you certain the LANCET / British Medical Journal were definitely talking about open coil springs exclusively, or is that your interpretation of the report? (For the real impartial readers, my previous posts have been removed - but I have them and will re-post if necessary... they will also be on my blog)
I have to also say I've never used a Tempur mattress but as the market leader, and artisan in the introduction of 'memory foam' to the domestic consumer, their research simply can't be ignored.
I found the following information on their website which I thought would be helpful for the majority. (It is however not INDEPENDENT - as it was taken from their website)
4. Research
CLINICALLY TESTED
The TEMPUR Mattress and Pillow have been clinically proven to reduce tossing and turning from an average 100 times during the night, to just 17 times.
The TEMPUR Mattress and Pillow were tested by the Institution for Clinical and Physiological Research at the Lillhagen Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden.
They tested 23,000 patients for a period corresponding to approximately 8 years of clinical and in-home use. The tests concluded that the TEMPUR Mattress offered pressure relief comparable to high-tech hospital beds costing up to 20 times as much as the TEMPUR Mattress. Patients suffered from less pain and experienced greatly enhanced and deeper sleep.
5. Medical Use
USED IN HOSPITALS
NHS Hospitals have tested our mattress to determine the significance of the pressure relieving properties. They awarded the mattress high marks for clinical significance in the areas of comfort, ease of use and support. Our mattresses are widely used in NHS Hospitals across the UK for pressure sore prevention.
RECOMMENDED BY 30,000 MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS
Over 30,000 Medical Professionals around the globe recommend the TEMPUR Products to their patients suffering from sleep difficulties, back, joint or neck pain. Our products are also recognised and purchased by hospitals, nursing homes and sleep centres across the world as a result of their unique pressure relieving properties.
Now these are real FACTS - endorsed by 30,000 medical professionals... It doesn't however confirm that it would be right for you and your preferences.
It is my OPINION however that each individual may covet, seek, or enjoy something different in a mattress, as we all come in different sizes, shapes, and weights. And ultimately this is possibly the most subjective item of all...
So if you choose to buy online it is imperative you assess your likes or dislikes personally in the shops - otherwise you are buying blind.
It will be difficult I'm sure, as salesman are notorious for their lack of detail but !!!! sure of their recommendations... mostly for a financial reason!!!
If you can, try them all, get the spec, and no doubt you will get a better deal from an internet retailer matching your wish list as they clearly don't have the same overheads.
I truly hope this helps someone!0
