Which mattress? (merged threads)

Isn't it though! Anyone want to start up a fresh thread?!
Anyway...further to my previous post about Blindcraft, I'm really keen to hear anything that anyone knows about these types of manufacturer; where their products can be purchased, what the quality's like, etc.
Are there any other similar organisations, particularly in SE England?
So far I've found:
Blindcraft (Edinburgh) blindcraft.co.uk
Glencraft (Aberdeen) glencraft.co.uk
Remploy remploy.co.uk
Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries
Ulster Supported Employment usel.co.uk
Sure Sprung (Swansea)
Personaly I'd prefer my money went to a not-for-profit organisation if possible.
The trouble is that a new thread would probably just get merged with this one, which is now far to big for anyone to read through.0 -

Hi Tim.
Thanks for your private message and explanation.
Malcolm has however been a chartered accountant for 18 years and won't just won't have it. He's adamant there's no excuse for not providing accounts or company information in nearly 3 years to companies house and says you would have had "countless demanding correspondence"
There's no way he'll now let me buy from you now. Sorry.
Thanks for the message though.
I actually have receipts for the last two years for my returns.
I'm not asking anyone on here to buy from me.0 -
I'm very disappointed with the way this thread has degenerated.
There are a lot of people who just want advice on buying a mattress or bed. Now whether Tim is offering facts or opinions based on his experience in the bed industry, he appears to be the only person directly answering people's specific queries on beds or mattresses, and trying to educate us all on what the various terms mean and what to look for. He is clearly sticking to the forum rules and not directly promoting his own beds, and although he obviously has a vested interest, we are free to take his advice or not as we wish, and compare it with advice from other sources.
If the people who are spending all their time attacking Tim spent as much time giving actual advice to the people trying to buy a bed or mattress then I would have a lot more respect for them.0 -
overview...It is well known that on average, a person can spend up to a third of their lifetime in bed sleeping and so therefore, getting a good nights sleep is absolutely essential. This is the prime reason for finding the best bed for you. In this guide, we have listed the different mattress types and bed types that are currently available with structural descriptions and how they work to maximise your comfort. We hope this guide will help you to select a good bed and mattress.

Top 5 Mattress Facts:-- The majority of mattresses usually last between 8 and 10 years.
- Mattresses will weather better if covered with a mattress protector. It's also more hygienic as you can whip them off and wash regularly.
- Buy a mattress topper, to make them feel softer.
- Mattresses should be vacuumed every now and then, but carefully so fillings don't suffer.
- Mattresses should also be turned end to end and side to side every week to begin with, then between once every three months to once every six months. If the mattress is non-turnable, rotate it instead.
1) OPEN COIL, UNILINK, BONNEL:
These 3 terms are used to describe a springing system that uses hour glass or helical springs. These springs are set in rows and are linked to the next spring horizontally and vertically. Open coil springs are around 5-6 coils high. A standard double will have 325 of these coils. The coils are all assembled into a single construction with helical wire. This is a thinner, spiral wire that joins the coils at the top and bottom to form several rows. An outer rod is then fitted around the top and bottom of the finished construction to provide additional strength. Once the basic construction is completed, the mattress can be filled and the ticking applied. As with most spring mattresses, the tension, or firmness of the mattress can be altered by changing the thickness of the wire, the number of twists in the coil and the number of coils overall. In addition, an extra row of springs may be added at key points across the mattress to provide additional support. This type of mattress is probably the most universally recognised and is also the most used system. It is found predominantly in budget to mid-range mattresses. Many manufacturers featured on this site have mattress products that use the open coil system. Certain manufacturers also use a variation on this spring system type and this is to use two layers of open coil springs. By doing this, variation tensions are created by wire thickness changes and the used fillings. This leads to a firmer and softer feel.

2) CONTINUOUS SPRING
This spring unit refers to a mattress or seating spring core assembly and method of manufacture which comprises interconnected rows of coil springs wherein each row terminates in a cut wire end which is bent inwardly into one of the end coils and in which the spring core assembly is surrounded on all sides by foam panels and is devoid of any border rods. The continuous piece of wire runs directly from the bed head to the bed foot. This type of system is particularly good for slatted bedsteads as the springs cannot fall through the gaps and it fully ensures total support through the life of the bed. Another feature of this system is that the support of the mattress is right to the edge and so this reduces the roll off effect.

3) POCKET SPRUNG
A pocket system is where each individual coil spring is wrapped in its own cloth pocket and is free to move independently. This means that the mattress will mould itself your contours giving the full length of your body maximum support and comfort. The spring counts do vary from bed to bed, the more springs, the greater the dispersing of your weight and the longer the life of the mattress. Pocket sprung mattresses usually have generous layers of upholstery and natural fillings to give a more luxurious feel. These do settle in the first few months of use to give body forms in the mattress, this has no detriment to the wear ability of the mattress but is exactly how it should perform. High quality mattresses

4) LATEX AND FOAM
These are becoming more and more popular in today's market place as they have many benefits. Again the foam moulds to the exact shape of you body supporting it along its whole length. They have pressure relieving properties, are usually hypoallergenic and are often no turn for ease of maintenance. Some are made completely from foam and others have springs wrapped in their core, in many cases a layer of latex is now used in conjunction with all the other types of springing systems.
5) MEMORY FOAM (VISCO ELASTIC)
First used by NASA during the shuttle space programme, technologically advanced memory foam responds to body heat and weight to support you perfectly, relieving pressure points and helping relieve symptoms of backache, painful joints and circulatory problems. This type of mattress does not need to be turned. It resists the harbouring of dust mites, making it ideal for people with allergies and respiratory problems.

Generally, most mattresses are used in combination with one of various choices of bed base, such as wooden frames, metal frames, divan beds, adjustable beds and bunk beds. You must remember to ensure that your mattress and bed are compatible with one another, particularly if you buy them seperately.
1) DIVAN BASE
The Divan base to this date is still the UK's most popular bed choice. Essentially it's an upholstered box, fitted with castors for mobility or on legs to create space beneath. Deep divan bases are often fitted with useful storage drawers making them perfect for anyone who has large storage needs. There are several types of divan base to consider:
A) Sprung Edge - Sprung edge divans feature a complete open coil or pocket spring unit mounted on a frame. Considered the most luxurious option, they provide even more support across the whole mattress and act like a giant shock absorber, increasing the mattress's durability.Platform Top - These divans have a rigid, non sprung top panel, often made from hardboard. Beds with these bases are generally firmer, as well as cheaper than beds with sprung bases.
C) Firm Edge - Firm edge divans generally feature a smaller number of larger, heavy duty springs within a rigid, wooden sided frame.
D) Slatted Base - Flexible slatted divans use laminated soft woods mounted in a frame creating a modest level of springiness from their bowed shape. The tension of some slats can be adjusted to suit individual requirements.
Storage Options - Under bed storage can be useful if space in your home is at a premium. Storage need not affect the comfort or quality of the bed - but it does cost a little more. Under bed storage options in divan bases include:

- Drawers are located in one or both sides and/or the foot end. Smaller drawers in the top half of the bed allow for bedside tables.
- Access to the interior space via sliding doors on one side or both sides and/or the foot end - mostly on budget models.
-

2) BEDSTEAD BASEThese have seen a remarkable revival in popularity in recent years and a vast array of styles is available in wood, metal, plastics, upholstered or any combination of these. To support the mattress, the most common system is wooden slats - either rigid (with no give) or flexible. Other systems include flexible or rigid wire mesh. The space between slats on most, cheaper, rigid bases is usually wider than on flexible slatted models but it is advisable to ensure the gap is not more than 9-10cm ( approx 3inches ). Wear and tear on a mattress will be greater the wider the gaps. Most manufacturers make their own recommendations for slat spacing to suit their own Mattresses, so check these before buying as they do vary. It is also possible to have a fully sprung bed base (with the same benefits as a divan) inside. A number of manufacturers make these to order. As many bedsteads are imported or antique they may not conform to current UK standard sizes, so take care to ensure your mattress and bedstead are the same size.
) ADJUSTABLE BASE
Adjustable beds are becoming increasingly popular as the bedroom becomes a multi-functional space. As well as reading or having breakfast in bed, people now watch TV from their beds and even work on their laptops. Of course, adjustable beds still offer benefits for a range of medical complaints requiring a raised sleeping position or raised legs or aid getting in and out of bed. Styling choices range from a traditional divan looks right through to contemporary bedstead. Some even incorporate massage units as an optional extra. Available as single beds or as doubles with individually adjustable halves, these beds either feature flexible laminated slats or fully sprung upholstered sections. Some models have five or more individually adjusting sections - for neck, head, upper body, legs and feet; other models might only adjust the head and feet; or even just the upper body. Some models are designed to slide backwards as the head end comes up, thus keeping you in more convenient contact with your bedside table.

4) BUNK BEDS / FUTONS
Bunk beds and Cabin beds are a popular option for parents and children. Generally available in either solid pine or steel, bunk beds are fantastic space savers that are practical for guests or children. Some bunks come complete with under beds, workstations, chairs or even futons.

Yup - pretty pathetic!
Lets take the thread back to where it should be bed advice any quarrels can be sorted out of the forum as it is now been clotted with useless arguments making it difficult to read
Im sure the king of saving :money:<<<<<<<<< would not like it
"Lets all just get along"
Vested interest or no vested interest if we did not have some sort of interest we would not be here we could be involved in buying, selling, manufacturing or researching we still have an interest which makes us post and be involved
People with no interest Vested or not vested would not be here!!!
If a materess salesman gives good avice that is not to do with his products direcly what is the problem?
If he is deliberately giving advice to sell his products and targeting people in private messages and using other unethical marketing techniques then it becomes a problem!0 -
As with many others new to this thread, I have found the volume of information overwhelming and do not have the time to wade through it all. I know my partner and I want a memory foam mattress (we slept on a Tempura for a week and loved it), but do not want to pay Tempuras prices. I came across the on-line company Snug Mattresses and was wondering if anybody else had used them and would recommend them? If anybody has any other recommendations/advice I'd be very grateful as we need a new bed quickly!0
