Thanks for the swift reply.
No the memory foam mattress didn’t seem to suit me – I would get up and couldn’t walk due to the pain.
We have a really old – approx 8years mattress – not sure of the name off my head. Think it was a medium but as it was so long ago I have no idea. I can look for the name later when I go home.
The mattress seems to of gone quite (what I can only describe as) soft/flat at the edges. Plus it is getting quite uncomfy and I don’t feel that it is offering any support – I think it cost about £200 (I know that is what you get from buying a cheap mattress)
We both sit on the edge in a morning to get dressed but that is about it.
Thanks againIt's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0 -

It would be good if you could have a look at the old mattress.0 -
Hello,
We are looking to buy
-a double wooden bed frame and mattress
-Do not want memory foam
-Looking for a low foot end light-coloured wooden frame
-Total budget: Around 450
Have spent quite a lot of time already looking at various websites and ebay shops etc; But, sadly, still can't make a clear choice. With bed frames, there seem to be very similar looking ones with a vast variation in prices and it turns out that some of the frames are made from MDF and not wood. We are certainly looking for a wooden frame.
Any advice/links to info on will be greatly appreciated.
Also, will be grateful for any info on good shops in Edinburgh (other than the big names)
Thanks in advance,

You really need to consider what type of mattress you need, as the most important thing is to find a suitable and comfortable one. Then with the money you have left out of your budget you can make a decision on the bedstead.
If you buy from a shop, you may struggle to find both in good quality.0 -
I tried a Highgate organic latex mattress against a (v60) memory foam mattress yesterday. The memory foam was very comfortable after it had warmed up and definitely contoured better but I think I prefer the softness of the latex more. I was told it's natural latex which I've been looking for, I'm just waiting for that to be confirmed.
Does anyone know if Highgate are a decent company? The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -
I hear they're OK. I tried a Highgate bed myself, which seemed nice but was non-turn so that ruled it out for me.0

They are fairly middle of the range, although probably better than many of the large brands.
I think the Highgate Organic Latex must be a new model, as it isn't on their web site. Have you tried calling Highgate direct?0 -

As for the big chain stores, you might want to do searches in the MSE forums for them.
Are there any sellers/sites you could recommend?
I was thinking about having a look in Dreams, but have seen hundreds of negative comments about there, which have put me off.
Also, are the non turn mattresses to be avoided? If so, wouldn't that rule out the ones with memory foam tops and such?Sigless0 -

Thanks Tim, I've emailed them because I couldn't find it on their site. The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0 -

I'm not allowed to recommend any, but other people can. Also, are the non turn mattresses to be avoided? If so, wouldn't that rule out the ones with memory foam tops and such?
Ideally all mattresses should be two sided in order to prolong their life, but this isn't as important with open coil springs because they are much tougher as all the springs support each other. However with pocket springs it is best to go for two sided if you can, as not turning them can make a huge difference to the life of the mattress.
There are a few two sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses about.0
