I have a slatted bed if that makes any difference.
I understand many things, mattresses are not one of them
Open coil springs are the traditional type springs where they are all connected together to create a sprung platform. With open coil springs you would need either medium to firm or firm in order to keep your back straight.
Pocket springs all work independently so that they will contour to your body and give you far better support. Pocket springs also prevent roll rogether. If you go for pocket springs then due to the fact that they contour to your body, you can go for whatever firmness you prefer. However you would need to either add extra slats to your bed to close the gaps to 1", or lay a sheet of peg board (or hard board) over the slats to spread the weight out.0 -

What type of base is it going on?
erm??? double bed..exactly according to that size...on wooden planks?
What is your budget?
max 200-250 def no more..
I'd say go for a good quality firm open coil sprung mattress around 9 or 10" deep.
i need it for a 4ft 6" by 6ft 3"
i this reffered to as a medium double//can only find a handful but not many places mention the site
No it is a standard double which you can find from any seller who sells UK size mattresses.

Out of the two I'd go for the second one as it is two sided and will last longer.0 -
One thing I have been recommended is that you need to get peg boarding if you want to put a pocket sprung mattress on a slatted base. This prevents the single springs in each pocket poking through the bottom of the mattress where they are not supported by the slats. Its not a issue for a memory foam mattress and probably no problem for a coil sprung mattress since the coils will be large enough to have something under them to support them. (Tim mentioned this a few pages earlier)
There is actually a company down the road in Margate that supplies peg boarding in Margate in westwood industrial estate, I'll see if I can get the name of them, I believe they have an internet presence. Still undecided though here on the mattress, I will update when I finally make a decision though
It is ok to use hard board if you can't get peg board.0 -
If your mattress is in good condition then you could consider buying a memory foam topper. I found a few pretty good quality ones inexpensively on ebay. I had a memory foam topper for two years on top of a very firm mattress. When the topper needed to be replaced (inferior density foam) we tried to sleep on the mattress alone but found it far too firm for us (and we like firm).
Anyway just a thought.
It sounds like from what you said that the memory foam topper you bought was very low density. Good quality memory foam wouldn't soften the mattress because it is high density in order to work properly. So in order to soften a mattress you would be better off with a soft reflex foam topper which would be much cheaper than memory foam.0 -
Tim, I am interested in your comment on my post half a dozen higher up.
You said in an earlier post that memory foam was best for people who liked a firm mattress. As I clearly need something softer, should I just go for a soft or medium pocket sprung mattress?
In a word yes.........you won't find good quality memory foam mattresses any softer than medium as they have to be high density to work properly.0 -

I'm fairly sure that Tim won't be able to respond to you on this question because Forum rules prevent him from promoting his own trading company - Bedlum-Beds. There's nothing, however, to prevent you from taking up his website offer to telephone him at B-B to ask for his advice!0 -
Hello all, just trying to glean some info from this excellent thread. We recently bought a Harrison divan which we are very pleased with.
We are now looking for a Medium-to-Firm mattress for the guest room, to fit a metal bedframe. I want something in stock for delivery next week.
When we were looking for our main bed I was very impressed with the Hypnos beds so I am looking at this mattress:

Any thoughts? Thanks.
Edit - I remembered the existing gues bed has our original mattress, a Kozee Sleep Back Care Deluxe. This served us well but I now want a pocket spring - my wife and I both love a very firm bed but neither of us like memory foam so how do the best Kozee Sleep pocket sprung mattresses fare?
Thanks.0 -
Hi Tim, you may have missed this so can i ask again... what fillings should the pocket sprung memory mattress ideally contain?
thanks in advance0 -
Hello all - my first post on a great site!
Like many people here, I too have found replacing our old mattress (Silentnight Miracoil - need I saw more?....) much more complicated than I'd previously thought.
Happily during my research I stumbled upon this thread and was very interested in other posters' experiences in what is clearly a veritable minefield and an industry fixated with sales jargon! Anyway, having done that and trawled around the various stores, astonished at the utter garbage some of the salespeople spoke and the prices being charged, we decided a pocket sprung/memory foam combination was right for us and contacted Bedlum Beds to order the La Romantica Madrid. We're hoping to get our mattress some time next week and can't wait for it to arrive. Tim's been very helpful so far so thanks to him both for his personal assistance on the phone and the advice he's given here which will make the task so much easier for many more people to come.
We'll report back on the mattress and the service in due course.
So far, so good.......0
