i know Tim that you said 1000 is better...this one said 620 does it mean is cheap quality?

    thank you for your advice
  • My first post but I'm currently looking for a mattress so here goes.....

Having read through every page on this thread I have to say I'm probably more confused than I was before I read it - mainly because I now have a little knowledge on the subject but not enough to make an informed choice I'm afraid.

Is anyone else frustrated by the smoke and mirrors that the forum rules seem to be creating? Whilst I'm sure that Tim is trying to be helpful, it seems to me that every bed that someone asks about is either rubbish, low end, middle of the road or one which Tim can't comment on because he sells them. His recommendation that you buy a turnable pocket sprung/memory foam mattress sounds like good advice but from what I can see, only 1 manufacturer is making these and Tim can't comment on them!

His other recommendation is to find an independant manufacturer as you will get better value for money, but surely there is also a risk involved with buying from a company you've never heard of.

I had originally considered a Kozeesleep mattress as Tim told us they were an independant, but then backtracked somewhat by saying that they had grown so big that they were operating like some of the larger manufacturers anyway.

Perhaps Tim can give us a list of manufacturers who he does not sell beds on behalf of, and group them into poor, middle of the road and what he would class as good quality (In his opinion of course and without recourse) so we mere mortals can make a more informed choice. He seems happy to tell us when he doesn't feel a manufacturer is up to scratch so presumably shouldn't have any qualms about telling us which ones are of good quality.

Anyway, here's hoping as I'm sick of sleeping on this uncomfortable mattress.

the measuremnt in my last post above is common but this was here isnt!

    help?

4' x 6'3" is more common than you think. Just contact sellers of double mattresses, and most of them will be able to supply 4' small doubles.

To start with it's a Sealy, which is a big no no (same company as Silentnight).

It only has 20mm of memory foam which isn't worth having.

Don't worry about the number of springs because it isn't pocket sprung, it is the unreliable and noisey Posturepedic spring system.

Warren Evans can be pricey, but if you got a deal you are happy with that is the main thing :) glad thats one more with a decent nights sleep looming! :)

Yeah, got a decent deal I think. Paid a bit less than £700 for that combo in King which has to be decent value (even in Ikea you would have struggled to have come under £500). About half of what regular price is but more importantly a bed that looks decent and is sturdy + a mattress that, even if not the cheapest for what it is, is of good quality and feels comfy (not to mention looks nice - a lot of the mattresses I've come across look like they've been in storage since 1982!!).

I'm afraid £700 for a basic bedstead and an open coil sprung mattress is very expensive. But you insisted on being able to try it out in a showroom first.

    I found over 4000 when I did a search.

How firm do you like your mattress?

What type of base is it going on?

    What is your budget?
  • I cannot find a super king size divan with drawers and a double sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattress within our budget. We were hoping to spend £600 to £700 but could stretch to £800, absolute maximum. We are both of a large build and have back problems so need a bed which is durable and comfortable and of course, the best value for our money. We prefer a medium to firm mattress.

Tim, I know you are unable to recommend any makes of bed but could you advise me on which type of bed it would be best for me to look for? Am I unlikely to find a decent quality bed with pocket sprung/memory foam (double sided or non turn) or a pocket sprung mattress within our price range? Or, would I be better looking for open coil, either without memory foam? Also, does a sprung edge base help to make a bed more hard wearing or does it just make it softer?

It is possible to get one (double sided) for under £800.

If you can't find one then go for pocket sprung only.

Remember to stay away from big brands and the big chain stores, otherwise you don't stand a chance.

A sprung edge base just makes it softer, and gives a slightly more luxurious feel.
