Hi Tim,
Thanks again for your post.
The problem with the satisfaction guarantee is how long does it last for. The initial comfort guarantee is fair enough, however if after two years a £600 + mattress isn't living up to the quality you would expect, it can be difficult to claim wouldn't you agree. For example some Memory foam manufacturers would state that unless a dip of at least 1 visible inch, prior to sleeping on, then they wouldn't honour a claim. Also the terms of the warranties and satisfaction guarantee's aren't always clear or widely available.
Also could you advise the length of time you have had experience with memory foam and is it long enough to guage a true vision of the expected lifespan of such.
Where did you read that they would only regard the memory foam as faulty if it dipped by more than 1"?
Memory foam shouldn't have a visible dip for at least 10 years if it is high quality, and is turned on a regular basis. I have never had a complaint about memory foam dipping yet. I personally have had over 5 years experience, but the manufacturers I deal with have had many more, and they haven't had any complaints either.
You may find some manufacturers may try to wriggle out of it, but if you start mentioning trading standards then most will back down.0 -

I suppose it could be indicative of the companies themselves, would be interesting to see other guarantees but Tempur state 2cm and Ergoflex 1" as indentation defects.
Incidentally for anyone purchasing any of these products make sure that you follow their registration processes. Ergoflex state that you must register the product within 30 days of receiving the product for full guarantee, which I think is pretty poor. Tempur only offer a 2 yr warranty unless the guarantee card is returned. May again reinforce Tim's reservations. If at first you don't succeed - destroy all evidence that you tried.0 -

Any memory foam with an indentation of 1" after only two years would have something seriously wrong with it.
They want you to register the product so that they can send you loads of junk mail, and probably also pass your details on. So make sure you tick the box to say that you don't want any junk mail. If you keep your receipt then I can't see it effecting your rights if you don't register.0 -

Yes but these are the tolerances that these manufacturers give before considering replacing not necessarily within 2 years tho.If at first you don't succeed - destroy all evidence that you tried.0 -

I really think you should have told everyone that you work for Bedlum Beds selling the La Romatica range, especially considering that there doesn't seem to be any other beds (at an affordable price) that you feel match the ideal criteria for a comfortable mattress.
I know you didn't want to mention the company you work for fear of being accused of advertising but I think everyone that has gone out and bought a La Romantica Madrid bed through your company would probably have appreciated knowing that the advice they were trusting before going for the Madrid was coming from virtually the only company that actually sells them.
Everyone on here, including myself, was treating the advice you've given as an absolute truth and authority on what constitutes a good mattress.
It just seems convenient that you have dismissed the quality of virtually ALL other affordable mattresses suggested on this forum as inferior to the specifications present in the La Romantica Madrid. And please accept my apologies if you have suggested other mattresses that are good, I just haven't found them among more than 50 pages that I've read).
You don't have to recommend other brands but surely being virtually the ONLY mattress 'expert' on this thread, you could come up with a handful of other mattresses that are as acceptable/good as the La Romantic Madrid.
And if you can't, then how can we trust the advice you are giving because then it certainly doesn't seem impartial.
If you honestly think that the La Romantica Madrid is the most comfortable/suitable/supportive mattress available on the market for under £500, then you should admit as much.
What's the use of all the advice if there aren't any mattresses that fit within your guidelines? (other than the La Romantica)
I think it's rather naive to think that anyone's advice is "impartial". Tim clearly favours a particular mattress configuration and consequently he sells it because he believes it is the best value for money solution on the market. That is how most decent retailers operate. If they didn't believe in their products then why sell them?
I've spent the last couple of weeks searching for a new bed myself and having read this thread end to end (sad I know) I came up with a shortlist that included La Romantica. I think if you read this thread widely enough you will find several brands and mattresses that other users rate in addition to La Romantica. At the end of the day, what might be right for one person may not be for another, and these are all just one person's opinion over another.
It's also wrong to say La Romantica is only available from Tim's business. I emailed La Romantica direct and asked for details of my nearest stockist, which turned out to be 15 minutes away from me as I wanted to try the bed for myself before ordering. Having tried dozens of beds over the last few days, most at the so called "premium" end of the market, mine and my wife's opinion was that the La Romantica was perfect for us so we ordered it at the local shop.
Ultimately Tim's advice is exactly that, advice. I read different views, tried the options out for myself and reached my own conclusion which was right for me.0 -

I can only assume Online Beds are still dealing with the older model, hence why they are selling it cheaper? Anyway when they get back in touch to confirm I'll let you know straight away. (Obviously Tim can't reply to our request on this forum, cause I'm sure some do goodie would accuse him of advertising his own website)
The quest for a mattress continues..........................
I have now ordered the La Romantica Madrid from Bedlum Beds and once it is deliveried, I will certainly put a post on this forum to let you all know what I think of it.0 -
Hi Tim,
I've pretty much read the entire thread <phew !> and I've worked out what is the best kind of mattress to get and what brands to avoid. However, my budget doesn't run to spending £400+ on a mattress. I'm trying to keep the cost down to a minimum, whilst also determined not to make the mistake I made a couple of years back in buying a Silentnight miracoil mattress that virtually collapsed in no time.
I need to buy a bed frame as well and as such, I've been looking at the cheaper stuff in Ikea - i.e. the Malm bedframe (£96 - 160cm) and a Hasselback pocket sprung mattress (£255 - 160cm) plus another £20-odd for the slatted base. This is about the limit that I can afford - given that they also want £50 to deliver. I know you don't think much of the Ikea mattresses, but I can't see how I can get a pocket sprung one that cheap anywhere else. I'm not really interested in memory foam.
Would you mind offering me some general advice on how to do this on a budget please ? I do have an old metal bed frame, but it's only 140cm and the wire mesh is sagging a little inbetween the stronger metal beams on the base. I could support it with pegboard etc, but I'm leaning towards just ditching it and getting a new bed frame. I don't want to shell out on a new mattress, then damage it on the sagging metal bed.
Is it possible to get a bed (frame / divan / anything) and pocket sprung mattress for £400-ish ?
Many thanks in advance, and kudos to you for being so generous with your time and advice on this forum. Not many people give their knowledge and time for free in this world. I raise my hat to you. ...or rather I would, if I had one.0 -

It is actually possible to get a good quality king size pocket sprung divan bed for not much more than £400 (delivered).
If your budget is tight then you would be better off getting a good quality open coil sprung bed rather than a low quality pocket sprung one.0 -

It goes to show that they don't have much confidence in their products.
At least these places publish their limitations, Its very difficult in the main to find the guarantee specifications for many companies. for instance I can find no information widely available for La Romantica. If at first you don't succeed - destroy all evidence that you tried.0
