Hi Tim/anyone else
have read through the thread and think a Pocket Sprung Memory Foam sounds right for me and saw a link from one of the other users to this mattress:
http://www.snugmattress.co.uk/acatalog/snug_pocket_memory_foam_mattress_23_double.html
It's a decent price and seems to fit all the criteria - wondered what your professional opinion was?
Also, I have seen a bedstead online on a number of sites and also on the Furniture Village website - so went down to the store to have a look. They are selling it for £100 more than any of the online retailers, yet the salesman was adamant that that line of bed was exclusive to them?? Can this be true - all the other suppliers have used the same name and brand, but now I'm worried I'm going to get an imitation..has this happened to anyone else??
Thanks for your help0 -
Unfortunatley, this is an underhand ploy by salesmen to get you to a) think you are getting a special deal, and probably b) offer to beat any other price you can find for the same model... It will, no doubt, actually only be made for Furniture Village under a different model number, but that by no means makes all others imitations, it just means that Furniture Village will have got it made/named differently so they can add their exorbitant mark up and then offer to beat any other quote for the same model...there wont be one!:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0

As you can see from the cut through drawing it is the cheaoer reflex foam encapsulated pocket spring type, and the memory foam density is a bit low at 55kg.0 -
OK... I've read through a fair chunk of this lengthy thread, and have ascertained that the 'ideal' mattress would appear to have the following:
- V60 foam (optimum depth between 2" and no more than 2.5")
- Double sided
- 1000 to 1800 springs
I'm 6' 4", and have quite bad back problems (about to see a spinal physiotherapist because I have rampant sciatica charging down my right leg courtesy of my lower back), so I'm assuming a sprung/memory foam combo would be best for me. Problem is, there are so many to choose from, that even with the above 'ideal' criteria, I can see hundreds to choose from... I need an 'IKEA' king sized mattress. What are the La Romantica Madrid/Venice ones like that were shown a few pages back?
If anyone has any personal recommendations for me, that would help me greatly. Thanks for any help!

Wow who would of thought buying a new bed could be so tricky ? its an absolute minefield makes buying a secondhand car a walk in the park.
I guess the thing is with a car you can take it for a test run, read up on its performance, visit lots of web sites and make a sound judgement.
I suppose you've guest it I'm in whats left of the car trade
Perhaps we need a dedicated INDEPENDANT web site where people can list the model they bought the pros and cons and more importantly how long it lasted.
Having Just looked quickly through the 55 pages it seems most people like myself have similar questions.
I have to say that it looks like Tim has been providing some excellant support and suggestions.
But If I sum it up unless you are buying a cheap bed which I guess a lot of folk on here are not, as they are taking the time to try and research it, making a concidered choice can be difficult.
Even assuming that you can decide on what type of mattress construction would suit you best, you then have to consider the base and its construction.
I guess that most people would gladly pay a bit more for a matrress/bed that was not only comfy but lasted good few years.
The problem is that it would appaer that throwing money at it may not ensure you get the best result particulary with some of the rebranding that goes on in big stores.
Ok so in our case we have a Relyon Alysebury 4' 6" (Firm)pocket srung matress with a sprung base divan unit that we have owned for 10 years.
It is now due for replacement as the mattress has started to sag although we have turned it on a regular basis. This was not a cheap bed I think we paid over £800 which was a lot of money 10 years ago !!
We have had our moneys worth out of this mattress and if a replacement lasted similar I would be happy. However I am not daft enough to know that manufactures always look for ways to cut costs and cheapen products through lower spec materials.
So question do Relyon still make a good bed ? and if so how does this one look http://www.bestpricebeds.co.uk/product_display.asp?id=2575
Obviously know nothing about seller so not making any recommendations jusy using as an example.
Not Googled bed and prices yet but it falls into the price I was thinking of paying but am I paying too much for the Relyon Name ?
Also Could I keep the old base, can't see anything wrong with the old one but I guess the springs have settled a bit after 10 years and just changing the matress would that be like putting paint on rotten timber.
If anyone would like to comment on their recent experiences with Relyon I would welcome them or suggest some alternatives.

As you rightly say, many of the big brands have now been taken over by big multinationals who are more interested in cutting production costs to increase profits for share holders. Relyon themselves are now owned by Steinhoff International Holdings Limited who also own a number of retail outlets (some of which have been slated on MSE) such as Harveys, Bensons, Sleepmaster, and Bed Shed.
So in answer to your question, from what I have heard from many people who have previously owned Relyon beds, they aren't what they used to be. I'm not saying they aren't any good, but the high price they charge doesn't reflect the current quality, and yoe you probably would be paying over the odds for the name that used to be associated with top quality.
This is why I recommend that you go for smaller independent manufacturers rather than the big brands.0 -
Tim.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply,
I am thinking of a two prong attack firstly will email Relyon that will firsty show how good their CR is at responding.
Asking what is the equivant spec to our old Alysebury in their current range ? and if we decide to buy it as we are concerned the quality may not be the same will they gaurantee it and provide a refund if we are unhappy.
If they agree can't say fairer than that.
Alternatively do you know anything about these guys http://www.highgrovebeds.co.uk/contactus.htm
I tried one of these beds in a local shop a heck of a lot cheaper and it did not seem to bad but of course I dont know how its made or the standard of materials a bed that costs £300 less but needs changing in 2 years to me is false economy.
Many Thanks

Having just spent 3 sleepless nights on a new Silentnight miratex 300 memory foam mattress (a cheap costco deal) which goes back today, I've decided to replace my entire bed which is 11 years old.
I'm looking for a king size divan with storage, and good back support as I have had back issues in the past. I'm happy to pay for a quality bed so don't want any budget options and either a pocket sprung or memory foam mattress, though it needs to be medium to firm.
Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance.0 -
Sorry to hear that spacehead our bed we are replacing is about the same age but has given very good service I am tempted by a relyon again as our original was very good although not cheap.
I have just emailed relyon to ask which beds are of a similar spec in their current range to our old bed if I go with a Relyon chatsworth I have found it for £750 with 2 drawers which is cheaper than we paid 10 yeras ago.
I know improved production processes bring down costs as does competion from forieign imports but it does make you wonder if the quality is still the same ???
There does appear to be an opportunity for a totally impartial web site dedicated to this subject given the effect a good or bad nights sleep can have on ones well being perhaps I will knock one up !!
