What is your criteria and budget? Hopefully we can help you make a more educated decision?Tim_Deegan wrote: »Hold on a second Ti.........12.5 gauge is a firm open coil spring unit (so won't be wallowy). The 9 gauge frame bit is missleading, I presume it should say 9 gauge steel rod edge.
Looking at the the way the quilting is done it appears that it is a middle (rather than top) of the open coil sprung mattress range.
What they appear to have done is used the shop price (rather than the their on line price), as the original price.
thanks for both of your comments,
my budget is around the £200 mark unfortunately, i'm after a double mattress and after a read through the previous advice given i beleive its an open coil mattress i need as my bed has wooden slats which are approx 2-3inches apart. (i believe my current is pocket sprung hence why it has gone all over the place).
so from your comments tim can i assume that as its middle of the range i should be getting a reasonable mattress that will last maybe a couple of years and the price is about right for what i would be recieving?

You can actually get a top of the range open coil mattress for similar money if you shop around on line.0 -
just looked at these as dd needs a new mattress and they do seem cheap BUT the reflex one i looked at, it is just a piece of foam with a cover on? Can anyone else reccomend a good cheap single mattress if this is the case..many thanks x
I got the 10" luxury version of the mattress. It is a piece of foam with 3 layers- normal foam on the bottom, 1" of soft foam on the top and 3" of medium density memory foam under that; so 4" of memory foam on top. Over that is a breathable, removable cover. It is pure luxury for me, but for my daughter I would definitely get the 8" mattress. I think you'll still be satisfied if you get that one.
single memory foam mattress linky
A couple of notes- make sure you have it turned the right way (memory foam on top!). And make sure you use all cotton sheets, because the mattresses can get warm. It has no springs and is thus very different to sleep on, but I love it; I get such deep sleep.
Just wanted to write all this to let people know you don't have to spend a fortune on a high quality mattress.
edited to add: It may be "just foam" but this is a very sturdy mattress. It weighs as much or more than a sprung mattress; it's very dense.0 -
All right, I've done two things - I've looked around for inependent resalers and manufacturers in London and came across this one - Any thoughts?
Apart from that I've been doing searches on the brands that were mentioned as being of goof quality in an earlier post (Thanks Ti) and come up with a nice range of options here:

The L and F link doesnt actually show a product but the rest look good. Warren Evans have been mentioned on here before, and are expensive for what you get, so althought the item is good, you should be able to find it cheaper elsewhere. If you can find a local store that has them in stock for you to try that may help make the decision as obviously feel and comfort do differ even on similar spec mattresses.
I can personally recommend Staples btw:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0 -
Have just been to look at the La Romantica matresses Madrid and Venice, found the memory foam strange, so decided to stick with Pocket Sprung which is what we have now. question is where does that leave us in terms of recommended manufacturers / quality / of this type of mattress, any ideas ??
Have the name of a supplier in Hampshire who has the Madrid and Venice in stock if anybody wants to look at them, not sure if im allowed to post the company heresanfly0 -

Cheers for that Ti. The L&F is only down the road from where I'm based so will go down there this afternoon to check it out.
Will report back...0 -
Can anyone give me their thoughts on a mattress that I am thinking of buying please. It is the Body Impressions, Spa Sensation, Somnio 4ft 6" medium.
Also I understand, from reading through this thread, that double sided memory foam with pocket springs in the middle is the best option. My query is, if the memory foam is on both sides, how does the heat escape? Does having memory foam both sides make the mattress warmer than just having it on one side?
BTW I'm a newbie to this forum posting "thing".

This is taken from the blurb about the mattress in question. I have put my comments in red. I'm sorry if it sounds negative, but this is a prime example of the gimmicks and sales hype often used in the bed industry:
"Spa Sensations™ sleep surfaces have the ability to dramatically reduce pressure points, conform to body shape and provide consistent, comforting support. Just like most pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses The Somnio does just this, the mattress core is made from a unique combination of Theratouch™ memory foam in other words just memory foam and independantly moving iCoil™ pocket springs. in other words normal pocket springs A special 'Quiesco' cushioning layer with an eco-friendly and antibacterial Bamboo cover lies on top. gimmick Mattress Specification: 17.8cm iCoil™ springs which means no motion transfer 4cm Theratouch™ memory foam, 55kgs/m3 infused lower density than the recommended 60 to 70kg per m3, but at the bottom end of acceptable with Green Tea and Charcoal Quiesco Bamboo more gimmicks quilted cover containing 230gs/m3 padding micro quilted cover and 2cm of 48kgs/m3 even lower density Theratouch™ memory foam 1cm high density foam, 38kgs/m3 reflex foam to help stabalise the memory foam Green Tea and Charcoal"
As for your question about how heat escapes from a two sided mattress: most of them have vents in the side, so each time you move the mattress acts like bellows allowing fresh air in to circulate around the spring layer.
Even on non turn mattresses the heat doesn't escape through the bottom of the mattress.0 -
OK,I have now been down to the showroom of the local manufacturer where I live in London and have come away pretty impressed. They really seem to know what they're talking about and the quality seems pretty good. Of course it's difficult to know whether one type of springs are going to be so much better than those of another make, but at some point you have to just rely on what the pros say to you because there's no way to research it.
ANyway, the mattress I am thinking of plunging for is the one denoted '1088' on this link here
Contrary to the name it has spring count of 1200 rather than 1088 and it's firm. Other than that it's hand made, has springs from a supplier in Yorkshire, has wool in it, has a nice cotton cover (unlike some of the ghastly covers I've seen on other mattresses the last few days)
Some more info about the mattresses they make is found here
So, for my peace of mind it would be very nice if certain people here could comment on the mattress + the credibility of the marketing blurb on their website - you know who you are ;-)
