I have been into Dreams today and tried out a few beds. The bed me and my OH seemed to feel comfortable was £1200 but we suddenly managed to get it knocked down to £615 for an ex-display, free delivery if we buy by 1pm etc.

So basically I want to know where is the best value for money mattress.

We would like a 5ft pocket sprung, 1000+, memory foam topper or latex topper.

What's the going rate? And brands to go for?
Gareth, do a forum search for Dreams and mattress recommendations, there have been plenty on both. Amazing how Dreams can go from £1200 to £600 in a heartbeat, plus free delivery  I bet they're still making money on the £600 deal, and it's not even worth that! What make/model was it, do you remember?

i'd like a pocket sprung mattress with memory foam

is there any advantage with having a double sided mattress with foam on each side over just a pocket sprung mattress with a separate memory foam topper?

I don't have back problems so I thought I could save money in the short-term and get the separate foam topper at a later date

I had a silentnight duck miracoil that after 12 months was shockingingly bad!
So as it was so new we put a topper on it which made very little difference.

Well the Silentsh*te mattress is now in my garden and I am now the proud owner of a La Romantica Madrid 1000 pocket sprung double memory foam mattress.

I can honestly say it is one of the nicest mattress' I've ever slept on....You can just tell it's quality.

I'll NEVER go in dreams again!

After a lot of indecision and one duff Healthbeds memory foam mattress from a different dealer, I'd just ordered a La Romantica Madrid 1000 double divan when I read your post.

Now I'm really looking forward to its arrival!

You won't be dissapointed. Where have you ordered it from?

I believe it's from a certain contributor to this thread - from his ebay shop. I've read many of his forum entries, and am inclined to have faith in his comments.
  • Hi again

I posted a few weeks ago but I've done nothing more about getting a bed.

However, one of this website's competitors sent me an email today with a link for TJHughes website for a Silentnight Miratex memory Foam 300 mattress for £249.99. I've been online but can't find out about thickness or type of springs or anything. Also, and this kind of puts me off a bit, it says it's ROLLED?? and once purchased and unrolled it can't be returned.

Now, for this price for a Silent night surely that's good but, as usual, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!! Anyone any guidance?

Also, is a petite double mentioned above a 3 quarter bed? Like 4 foot wide because I'd like one of them also.

Before you buy do a search in the MSE forum for that brand.
  • Re my last post about the TJ Hughes offer, I did a search on here as suggested. I didn't realise it was ALL FOAM. I don't fancy that at all.

I also don't fancy the idea of being suffocated which is what some of the descriptions conjured up for me. I'm not a "it must be a memory foam" buyer, it just so happened to be one. I don't like too much heat either.

Right, that's that idea out the window then.

Before my newfound consumer savvy (ie this site:p ) I would have just gone into Dreams, sat on a couple, and plump for one in the middle ground, near the cheaper end of price and gone with it. Now I want to get the best for my money.

So, back the drawing board for me then.

  • Hi I wish had found this last week I have just bought the chaucer mattress from dreams as I am on our fourth in as many years.I have severe low back problems and have been spending around 2-300 pounds a year replacing the mattress the last one only lasted 6 mths but I think that is down to our bed not having a middle post so when me 11 stne gets on then 15 stne hubby it just collapses in middle. They have given me a ten year guarantee with it that says they will replace it if anything goes faulty in that time which I thought was better than sn who refused point blank to do anything when mattress was only 6 mths old (replacement for first that lasted 11 mths didnt get any guarantee with it )How bad is it ?The mattress was very comfy in the shop and although it is a non turner he did say to swap it top to bottom once a month for first 6 months.Min concern is whether it is a nasty mattress I cant take waking up in agony much more
