As a separate point.... what slightly confuses me that my vision of memory foam was that it was flat and the body heat meant the foam moulded to your body. However, looking at the photo here, the mattress isn't flat to start with - the memory foam is pinched where the hand tufting is (is that the right term?). Doesn't this adversely affect the memory foam ability to mould to the body given that there are these mini-craters in it?

Actually Searcher2, I hadnt even thought of that!!
    Maybe someone could veriffy.

No that doesn't actually change the way the memory foam works at all because the craters as you put it aren't the full depth of the memory foam. But you will actually sink almost the full depth of it.

Hi everyone I've just read this entire thread and thanks especially to Tim for all his advice and help given. I have a question for Tim or anyone else who can help please.
I bought a sofa bed with a Concept Memory foam mattress that was meant to be suitable for sleeping on every night. I have been using it for 5 nights only and so far it is the most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept on-I'm aching all over and waking up through the night as I'm not comfy.
I called the seller and they said it's not meant to be used every night, I explained that they had told me that it was on the phone, hence the reason I ordered it.
I am already having problems with it anyway as it arrived scuffed and dirty (it is meant to be a brand new one from the manufacturer) and the sellers have agreed to replace it, but in light of it being so uncomfy I really don't want another one. The seller has said he will order a new one and ask the manufacturer if they can supply a better mattress.
Do you know what sort of mattress should I be looking for in a sofa bed that is meant to be used every night?
Any help would be very gratefully received.

I should add that the mattress is 6cm deep foam and the memory foam part is 2.5cm

    Hi Tim.

I have followed these threads and your answers with great interest.

Are you please able to give me any information on the Ashbourne 1200 Memory Double mattress? (Made by Airsprung for argos).

It is described as medium firm, tufted, pocket sprung memory mattress with damask cover, 1053 springs (for double)
and 4 flag stitched handles. Depth of mattress 23cm. And should be Double Sided ("Turn mattress frequently"),
Airsprung have told me that it does have 50mm of memory foam each side, which seem to tick desired requirements so far.

But were unable to confirm the density at time of asking, although did state the mattress has a "Flex bond of 450 gram", if I heard correctly.
Which I am hoping is not an equivalent for a density of 45g/m3 or the like? Bearing in mind your recommendation of a preferred value of (quote) "55kg/m3, although around 65kg/m3 is supposed to be the best".

The springs are said to be 16.5 gauge, would this be normal for pocket springs of this quantity for a 'medium firm' feel?
    Or perhaps too soft?

I'm hoping it might be more supportive than the 'Airsprung Carlton Trizone Memory Double' which we have found to be inadequate.

What tension or gauge springs are used in the La Romantica Madrid please?

    Thanks.
Hey O, Listen What I Say O.

    Hi.

I'm not really up on sofa bed mattresses. However I would have thought that a mattress that is only 6cm deep would have to go on a flat base. Otherwise you will feel every bump on the sofa bed frame.

Do you have a link to the mattress?

What type was the original mattress that came with it?

    Regards
    Tim

Ok ok i know i should read the posts but i have read 10 pages and am getting weary.

    All good stuff though.

We are looking at buying the hemnes beds from ikea. They go v nicely in our new home.

now for the mattress. I believe that they come with the slatted ready made thingy they do. Not sure on size between but i imagine bigger ather than smaller!

Budget is about £500 for "ours" (king) and £300 for spare room double.

What should i be looking for? Think we tested a few and liked medium to firm. NOt that botherd about memory but might be nice.

    thanks,

The Hemnes comes in quite a variety of flavours, from the single 'day-bed' to a 4poster, so not sure what would best suit it and what spec it will be. I would suggest a pocket sprung mattress for you, and probably a decent open coil for the spare room. That way you should be able to get the both for well within budget.

With a bit more info on bed spec, we may be able to better advise. Basic info to take into consideration though... 1000+ pocket spring count is good, fully turnable is best for longevity and I believe around 13.5 gauge rod for the open coil mattress.

    HTH :)

I've spent all night looking for the answer, all the comments are massively vague one exactly which topper is actually the one to go for!

I want a topper as I am a student and the bed in my room is effectively a futon, a 12 year old mattress and a thin 5 year old mattress on top. It is so bad that I have a £70 outdoor camping double inflatable mattress which is made from stiff foam on top which levels out all the protruding springs, for the last 4 weeks it has been fine, but it is very very firm, so I want to make it softer. The real question is, what do I buy?

Ideally I would make the landlord replace it with something better, but the thin 5 year old one was his solution to when I complained last time, it is just an open sprung cheap cheap cheap mattress.

I was just going to get a John Lewis memory foam topper and be done with it, but some of the toppers on ebay are 5", viscoelastic and 55-65 kg density which ticks all the boxes for under £50, a huge saving on £130!

    So, what do I need?

    thanks,

Do they do the bed in UK sizes rather than continental? If so you would be better off not buying the mattresses from Ikea. You can also buy continental sizes from UK manufacturers, but they usually charge a little extra.

Isn't there an organisation which dictates minimum standards for student acommodation?
