  • We have just bought a single bed with pull out guest bed underneath from friends. We now need to get mattresses. The beds will only be used in our spare room very occasionally so we don't want to spend a lot of money on them. Any advice please.

These are actually quite easy to get hold of from independent retailers. Just make sure you have all the correct sizes including the depth. They are usually smaller than a standard single, and are 5'9" long, 2'6" wide, and 7 to 8" deep.

The mattress on the main bed would usually be a standard single (6'3" x 3').
  • Thanks Tim, I don't think that we could attatch the head and footboard as they are really heavy and held by wrought iron. But I will definitely look into putting strong ply underneath, and a new mattress.

All the others, sorry, but I cant check the links during work due to the web-filter we use. If you can post the spec I may be able to advise, otherwise hopefully Tim will reappear like the shopkeeper in Mr Ben!
I'll join the queue as i also have a divan in mind that i would like some feedback on.
My previous divan deal collapsed as by the time i had the money together the price had gone up. :o

I've got a £500aprox budget for a superking divan and this is what i've found thus far -

    http://www.bedstar.co.uk/shop/catalog/Kozeesleep_Caversham_6FT_Divan_Bed-p-24005.html

    http://www.bestpricebeds.co.uk/product_display.asp?id=1371

Pro and cons between the 3, or perhaps recommend something else?

    Many Thanks

    Trev

Looks well made, says hand-nested springs so at least not in foam. Good spring count and Damask is good feel and quality. Looks mid-range but good VFM.

It's the right Kozeesleep brother at least. Good spring count and will be more in the SK. Again Damask, so good quality. Compressed polyester filling so shouldn't go flat after a while too. Looks a bit funny though ;)

Non-turn, not ideal as you can only use half of the mattress! Low spring count so not as supportive as the others but ok. Fabric cover will be ok but not hard wearing. Good memory foam depth but only real plus in an average mattress. The guarantee will almost certainly be sliding-scale too; ie, you will be fully covered the first year, but pay a 'contribution' to the new one in incriments up to 5years. Most manufacturers do a similar thing, but make it 10year!

Sorry TiTheRev, but I had to step in here.

Damask is a mixture of materials. The higher quality damasks are hard wearing, and are used on almost all high quality beds, except for those that need fabric with more stretch (like memory foam, or softer pocket sprung mattresses). In these cases a 4 way stretch knitted fabric is used to allow the mattress to contour to your body without pulling tight.

These materials don't have a reflection on the quality or durability of the mattress.

    Cheers guys,

I would go for one of the 1st two - yet the OH is saying the 3rd one with memory foam will be better, but i'm not too sure as it has a lower spring count.
I've also seen elsewhere online that the Caversham is quoted as being hand tufted, which might actually swing it for me.
But purchase day is Saturday, so i have till then to win my case against the OH.

Both of the first two are hand tufted. This actually means the style of quilting. Hand tufted means that the cords and felt washers are inserted by hand. Most independent manufacturers still do most of the assembly by hand on most mattresses.

You probably know my feelings by now on non turn mattresses.

It's better to go for a high quality pocket sprung mattress, rather than a lower end pocket sprung/memory foam mattress.
