Hello, not sure if this has been mentioned, but my current favourite trick is to pre-load (so I am in credit) my holiday spending card (santander zero, not around anymore sadly) - this avoids any interest charges at all and gets a great exchange rate...

I've got a zero card and i'm keen to do this, but i wasn't sure how much cash i would be able to take out on day one from an ATM. I need 800 euros on first day. We're going to Italy.

why wait - send the money just before your holiday and get a positive balance, and then hit the ATM at the airport!

Provided this isn't contrary to the T&C of your card and the account is subsequently blocked leaving you without access to funds, that's a great plan

  • Having recently been in Italy and the Canary Islands, I was surprised to see the Shop front Bureau-de Change outlets offering 1.26 Euros to the pound commission free.
This is significantly better than the best rate of 1.21 I managed to get in the UK for normal amounts.
Is this normal or am I missing something ?

Did you take a picture? Perhaps it's the rate if you want to buy the £.

Then they are making a loss on the deal - can't see why they would want to do that

I think you misunderstood the signs.

It's a myth unless someone comes up with a pic. Until then I will assume it is the Buy rate for the Pound.
Just as BdC here indicate a Buy rate for the Euro in the UK....

Okay I see where you are coming from.
Exchange rates on CC transactions was 1.26, so using my CC was cheaper than paying with UK bought Euros.
  • I am heading to Las Vegas from the UK 27th dec to 4th jan this year & looking for some travel money advice?

I have been looking into the Fairfx dollar cash card for our trip but aren't really sure on how much we will need therefore we are planning to put alot on it with the potential to get a refund and cash it out when we are home!?

Can you suggest what my best option is?

Whether I should get a dollar cash card and exchange it when I get back? How good are the exchange rates when I return?

    Or...

An anywhere card and I can use it back in the UK for things when I get home!

    Or....

    Just take dollars in cash?!

    Help please! Xx
