I was just wondering if any of you would recommend the womens institute for learning crafts or is it only for those already proficent at these skills. Also would 35 be too young to join? It seems like an oldstylers club but don't know if it would be too old for me. Thanks

Old age isn't bad when you consider the alternative.

    Hi FZwanab,

We have an older thread on the women's institute, so I have merged your thread with it as it helps to keep all the replies together. As always posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

Now this really is Old Style!!!

I've recently joined the Women's Institute (W.I). All of my friends think I'm completely barking mad (even more so than usual) but it's actually great fun. Our local group has a real mix of people from all sorts of backgrounds and all sorts of ages. The one thing we all have in common is a real interest in doing things Old Style - whether that's baking cakes & making jam or getting involved in campaigns on climate change and reducing food waste. It's a bit like a real-life version of the OS MSE board :D

Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else here is a W.I. member?

I've merged this to an older thread on the WI to keep the responses together.

I keep toying with the idea...you do make it sound like fun!

I want to join too! However, it may be too much for DH who has recently been accusing me of actually being 73 (I'm 29). What's wrong with a butter dish and home-baking? And I've had a shopping trolley since I was 19!

Is it right-wing and "old-fashioned"? Or just sensible and old-style?

Sorry Mrs. Irwin, as the box to reply came up I realised you were asking if the WI is right wing and old fashioned, not being OS. doh :p

Calendar Girls was based on a WI group.

I went once - the 'Jerusalem' thing did it for me. It could have been the group, but it was a bit hierarchical, 'top tabley', IYKWIM
