I just want to have fun and do some crafty type things, not sit and discuss deep sea fishing or other issues that the WI try to influence the government on.

whitesatin I think you should have joined our WI - we are obviously a bunch of rebels! ;)

Maybe you are right! No, the people in ours are lovely but I have had to spend much of my life in meetings (oops! I almost said meaningless meetings:D) and just want a bit of a laugh and some relaxation. I will be moving house and area in the next few months so perhaps I will seek out a more laid back group to join.

Yours sounds like fun, just the job.

We're trying to cut back on the amount of time spent on "business" at our meetings too but we do have a couple of members who seem to really enjoy that side of the meeting.

We rent a room in the local community centre for our meetings and it's let to another group immediately after us. I'm responsible for clearing up and making sure all our stuff is put back in our cupboard and I get really stressed when we only have five minutes left and somebody brings up yet another item under "Any other business"

    I've looked at the website.

But I still don't know what you "do".

Do you meet once a month & chat?

Is there more too it than that?

    How does the cooking feature?

We begin with coffee and a chat as we meet in the mornings. Then we usually have a speaker-we try to have a good mix of topics-some serious and some more light hearted. Cooking demonstrations are difficult for us as there are no facilities for them in the hall where we meet but we try to have at least one craft demonstration each year where members can make something .

While the speaker is clearing up we have more coffee . Then we have the business part of the meeting-minutes are read and any matters arising are dealt with, there's usually some correspondence either from headquarters or from other local groups. On a national level the WI does quite a bit of campaiging and our WI does try to get involved in various local issues-we've helped with a survey to try and improve the village centre and run a refreshments stall at the station open day.
  • Well I have decided to join the WI, I know its not very frugal with the annual membership but I am hoping to learn new skills to make me more money saving.

Anyone else in the WI? I am not sure what to expect, my first meeting is tomorrow evening.

I have also been thinking about it - but am a little unsure.

There seems to be quite a few groups around here and I don't know how you would choose the right one.

Will look forward to any replies from "those in the know" :D.

  • I sent an email from the website to my local HQ and they gave me all the info. I am a bit nervous to be honest and not sure what my local group do? The website does not give you much info on what happens at meetings, I know they are all different but a rough idea would be good.

Hubby thinks it hilarious, says it will be full of old ladies and I will be the youngest at 34! I just said "oh well just me in the calendar next year then!" :rotfl: ;)

    Hi thunderchild,

If I remember correctly you can go along as a guest to get a feel for your local group and to see if you think it would suit you.

This earlier thread may help to give you an idea:

I'll add your thread to it later to keep the replies together.
