I am a member of a new (1 year) WI branch, in Blackheath SE London and there the older women are definitely in the minority, most of the members are "yummy mummies"! Having said that, everybody is very friendly and there are very interesting speakers. Give it a try!

Thanks for your replies, I know I should just go and give it a whirl, Merlin, I don't really want to go on my own either, PM me, where do you live :) I asked about the average age of the ladies at the local branch and was told they are young at heart :)

    Thanks Caterina,

I didn't know about the branch in Blackheath, the last time I checked, there wasn't one.

Hopefully I'll meet you at the next meeting.

Thanks to all the lovely people on here I have managed to cut my hours down to 2 days a week, allowing me to spend more time with my gorgeous Children. :j

    Hi there
I have lived in a small village for the last 4 years and have been toying with the idea of joining the WI, I'm 39 with a DS who will start school this year. I enjoy crafting and gardening and wondered if any of you were WI members, how old you are, what it's like ,would you recommend it? What have you done as a member?
Before you ask, no I don't want to join just to do the nudey calendars :)

Can anyone answer these questions, please  I'd be interested in joining, if there were activities such as we discuss on Old Style :T

I'll add this to the existing thread on WI to keep ideas together ;)

I've been a W I member for about 12 years & have sung Jerusalem about 3 times, one of those at a Council meeting (AGM).
The good thing about W I is that you get all the details of all the events in your area, crafts, walks, trips & outings. So you aren't limited to just what your Institute has to offer.

It's funny I have seen this post on here. We have just moved to a new village and I was thinking about joining the WI.I went to a meeting last week and everyone was lovely, although I was the youngest there by about 15-20 years!! Everyone was very friendly so I think I'll definitely go again :)

  • I don't go anymore, though I am now about the right age lol. But in the villiage where I lived previously I did join. I was the youngest at about 35. I was in awe of the food they made. I found it very interesting. All the ladies were very nice. They put on a panto every year which I really enjoyed. And they had guest speakers every now and then. I still remember the lady beekeeper. Her enthusism made it very interesting.
